The Role

The Australian Naval Seaworthiness Authority (ANSA) plays a critical role in bringing nuclear powered submarines into service in the Australian Defence Force and supporting their ongoing operations. With responsibility for regulating the submarine (not the propulsion), there is significant work underway to identify and enact required regulatory changes and establish interfaces with the future Australian Naval Nuclear Power Safety Regulator (ANNPSR) and other peer regulators.

This role will lead the planning and delivery of strategic deliverables, business as usual tasks and ad hoc activities which:

  • Support the integration of (NPS) into the Defence Seaworthiness Management System (DSwMS) and the new regulations coming in January 2026 under the Defence Seaworthiness Program;
  • Support the identification and addressing of co-regulatory requirements with the Australian Naval Nuclear Power Safety Regulator (ANNPSR);
  • Support the provision of review and advice on legislation, regulations, codes, standards, policy, and guidance material;
  • Identify and provide analysis and guidance on relevant risks; and
  • Provides subject matter expertise in support of the activities of the broader organisation.

Note: This role, like all ANSA roles, will also be supporting the whole-of-ANSA project implementing a refined seaworthiness regulatory framework. It may also be subject to a change management process, pending upcoming organisational re-design.

This role is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known in Defence as a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP). This enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the base salary otherwise payable under the Defence Enterprise Collective Agreement (DECA), for positions in occupational disciplines/classifications that are critical to Defence capability.
