Launceston, Tasmania, Australia Jobs and Careers Full time $114,282 - $129,943 per year
  • Inspire, Lead, and Grow a High-Performing, Safety-Oriented Technical and Operations Team
  • Build and maintain the team's capability through ongoing training and upskilling
  • Full time, ongoing position based in Beauty Point (Northern Tasmania)

About the opportunity

The Australian Maritime College (AMC), a specialist institute of the University of Tasmania, is recognised globally as one of the most comprehensive maritime education, training, and research organisations. AMC offers world-class programs across Maritime Engineering and Hydrodynamics, Maritime Logistics Management, and Seafaring and Maritime Operations.

We are currently seeking a proactive and hands-on Marine Manager to join our team at the AMC Seamanship Centre, located at the scenic Beauty Point Campus. In this pivotal role, you will ensure the safe, efficient, and compliant operation and maintenance of AMC's fleet of vessels, equipment, and associated systems across AMC. This is not your typical desk-bound management role. As Marine Manager, you'll be expected to lead from the front—applying your technical and trade skills to support the hands-on maintenance of vessels, equipment, and maritime facilities. You'll step in operationally when needed, working alongside your team to ensure smooth and safe delivery of day-to-day activities while also managing the long-term sustainment of the fleet. Your practical expertise and technical knowledge will be just as vital as your strategic oversight, making this a truly dynamic and rewarding position.

Beyond operations, you'll play a vital role in shaping team culture, promoting collaboration, professionalism, and continuous improvement across the Beauty Point based team. You'll be a visible and active safety leader, developing and embedding safe systems of work, championing risk management practices, and fostering a deep understanding of shared safety responsibilities. You will also ensure compliance with relevant legislation, university policies, and maritime regulatory standards, while empowering your team and advancing a culture of safety, accountability, and excellence.

What you'll do:

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for site operations, including the small vessel fleet, maritime plant and equipment, and associated infrastructure supporting training, research, and commercial activities.
  • Directly lead a skilled technical team, delivering essential support for teaching programs, research projects, fieldwork, and consultancy.
  • Take a hands-on approach, ready to step in and contribute operationally when needed and apply technical and trade skills to support maintenance of vessels and facilities.
  • Provide strong and visible safety leadership, actively championing a culture of safety through training, coaching, open communication, and reinforcement of safe behaviours at all levels.
  • Design, implement, and improve safe systems of work and operational procedures to reduce risk and enhance safety performance.
  • Lead the planning, budgeting and scheduling of planned maintenance activities for AMC plant and equipment, vessels and key infrastructure utilised by Seafaring and Maritime Operations across AMC sites to maximise asset availability.
  • Plan, manage and deliver minor works and projects, including the supervision of contractors and third-party service providers, ensuring safe and timely execution in line with project goals and standards.
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives to optimise technical service delivery, improve safety outcomes, and extend the lifecycle of AMC's maritime training assets.
  • Engage with the AMC Leadership team to ensure an integrated approach to safety, culture and technical excellence.

What we're looking for:

  • Proven leadership experience in managing multidisciplinary technical teams, with a demonstrated ability to foster a positive and high-performing workplace culture that emphasises safety, respect, collaboration, and continuous development.
  • Extensive maritime operational experience, and sound technical knowledge of maritime equipment including the management and maintenance of small vessels and maritime equipment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in providing expert technical advice and guidance on practical, hands-on tasks, ensuring a high level of competency and safety. This may include the use of tools and equipment and offering solutions to technical problems.
  • Project and/or operational management experience, including budgeting, resource planning, asset scheduling, and the successful delivery of maintenance works, technical projects, or commissioning of new technologies or systems.
  • Demonstrated expertise in safety leadership, including the development and implementation of safe systems of work, effective risk management practices, and improving team-wide safety knowledge and behaviours in alignment with maritime, university, and WHS legislative requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of maritime regulatory frameworks and compliance standards, including familiarity with relevant Australian maritime authorities (e.g., AMSA), university governance, and statutory workplace safety obligations.
  • A trade qualification (e.g. Diesel Mechanic, Fitter, Electrician, or Auto Electrical Technology) is highly desirable but not essential.
