AusCycling is the nation's peak riding and cycling body, representing more than 5 million Australians who ride bikes. To contest the biggest (para) cycling events in the world and create healthy, inspirational role models that value their connection to the sport. Our aim is to be a Top 3 para-cycling nation on the Paralympic medal table.

Position Purpose

To apply sport science and data analytics expertise to enhance athlete development and optimize competition outcomes. The role will empower coaches, athletes, and performance staff to make informed decisions within 'impact time' that close performance gaps and drive progress and excellence against international benchmarks.

Responsibilities

Performance Tracking & Data Analytics

  • Quantify performance and forecast athlete progression against world best standards
  • Ensure robust acquisition, databasing, quality assurance and calibration of training and competition data (ie. power, speed, cDA, positioning, etc.).
  • Translate complex datasets into actionable insights, data visualisations and performance dashboards that inform coaching decisions, athlete IAPPs and long-term performance planning.
  • Develop, maintain and refine athlete performance tracking systems to track key metrics across biomechanics, physiology, and race execution.

Applied Sport Science Support

  • Day-to-day - Deliver training and race sport science analysis at training sessions, major competitions and national team activities
  • Periodical evaluations - Work alongside coaches to interpret short and long-term training and race data, ensuring athlete monitoring against WITTW and IAPPs. Construct and update selection criteria.  Create discipline depth charts together with pathways
  • Deliver insights from data/performance analysis to support maximal training adaptations over time, and race day performance
  • Testing – Analyse and report on performance tests
  • Planning - Micro macro planning and assistance for coaches
  • Strategy - Apply performance modelling and race segmentation analysis to investigate determinants of success, identify performance gaps and optimise results.
  • Research and innovation - Lead applied research and project work to address performance questions and build the evidence-base for para-cycling
  • Technical support - Product owner for Para-cycling and targeted ACT systems (ie. Training Peaks, Lumin, Vimeo, SRM, etc.). Bug fixing during events.
  • Set up and maintain data/video analysis systems in cooperation with other disciplines in the D&I team.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Provide direction to the NIN network on data priorities, testing protocols (including bike fits), performance monitoring standards to foster a unified and consistent support system across decentralised environments
  • Lead workshops, learning events and capability-building initiatives in performance analysis and race science for athletes, coaches and performance support practitioners
  • Support coach development by identifying performance gaps and providing insights that directly inform training, planning and talent development pathways
  • Work closely with the Performance Manager Para-cycling to align strategies, resources and performance support services with national program strategies and objectives.
  • Train trainees and stakeholders for a robust analysis support workflow and network

Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant sport science discipline (ie. Biomechanics, Performance Analysis, Exercise Physiology, etc.)
  • Postgraduate qualification in Movement Science, Sport Science, or Data Analytics/Science
  • Experience with dashboard building (PowerBI, Tableau) and managing databased datasets and models. Able to query (sql) and programme (Python) to automate analysis of large datasets.
  • Current professional registration (ESSA Accredited Sports Scientist) or eligibility for equivalent recognition
  • Proven experience working in high performance (Paralympic) sport (national and/or international)
  • Demonstrated expertise in performance analysis, data analytics and physiology including developing bespoke methods/workflows that impact performance outcomes.
  • Strong applied knowledge of para-sport, including classification systems, training and competition demands, and considerations for different impairments
  • Extensive experience of planning, implementation and monitoring sport science interventions, with the ability to adapt based on assessment data and performance trends.
  • Comprehensive technical knowledge and ability to operate a wide range of equipment, software and tools to capture and analyse performance data.
  • Strong leadership, coordination and project management skills, with proven ability to align coaches and performance support practitioners across decentralised and complex environments.
  • Demonstrated capacity to facilitate cross-functional collaboration and foster integrated, athlete-centred planning
  • Experience influencing athletes and coaches through applied and innovative sport science practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust and maintain strong working relationships with athletes, coaches, practitioners and stakeholders
  • Proven ability to communicate complex data and insights in a clear, engaging and audience-appropriate manner.
  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking and innovation skills, with a track record of applying evidence-based approaches to improve performance outcomes.
  • Effective organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities.
