The Role

In this role you will enjoy working within our friendly and dedicated team and as the Health Information Manager the responsibilities will include collecting, storing, analysing and distributing health related data including electronic health records. Ensuring the accuracy, privacy and security of patient data is maintained at all times, consistent with the hospital vision, values and relevant legislation and to provide timely and accurate analysis and coding of medical records. Other HIM related tasks as required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implements and manages Health Information Service, including patient identification, filing, numbering, collating, tracking, storage and retrieval of medical records.
  • Screens and controls requests for information received from patients, clinicians and external facilities.
  • Provides in-service education to hospital staff on documentation, privacy and case mix.
  • Advises on policies related to record retention and the implementation of disposal scheduling in accordance with legal requirements.
  • Liaises with the Clinical Coders to ensure all discharges are coded in accordance with ICD-10-AM and data entered in the patient management system within 14 days of discharge.
  • Liaises with hospital management and health care professionals to ensure adequate documentation exists within the medical record to support quality patient care and accurate coding of morbidity information.
  • Manages the collection, compilation and retrieval of health information for the purpose of coding, grouping and reporting to external organisations as required by legislation.
  • Participates in relevant professional bodies and maintains own professional development.

  • Accurately and efficiently code inpatient episodes to meet internal quotas and support external submissions.

  • Collaborate with your team to continuously improve coding standards and processes.

Selection Criteria

  • Ability to work within and contribute to the values of Waikiki Private Hospital.
  • A tertiary qualification in Health Information Management.
  • Eligibility for membership with the Health Information Management Association of Australia (HIMAA).
  • Good clinical coding and grouping software knowledge and skills with the ability to code moderate complex patient episodes of care.
  • Previous experience as a Health Information Manager or Supervisor in a hospital environment desired.
  • Working knowledge of coding using the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Health Related Problems, 10th revision, Australian Modification (ICD-10-AM) together with the Australian Classification of Health Interventions (ACHI) and the Australian Coding Standards (ACS).
  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills as well as interpersonal skills with the ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Sound knowledge and experience in evaluating and establishing standards of health records.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with privacy legislation and release of information legislation/policies.
  • Demonstrated highly developed computer processing and data management skills
  • Current knowledge of relevant health legislation including the Privacy Act.
  • Desired experience with the NSQHS accreditation process and LARU licensing.
  • Experience in using ICD-10-AM, ACHI and ACS in a hospital environment and the Australian Standards for medical records.
  • Experience in using the AR-DRG grouper.
  • Ability to manage and prioritise own work.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team-based environment.
