We are looking for a highly experienced Clinical Research Assistant to apply their subject matter expertise and advanced knowledge to support the natural history studies occurring in the Ngo Group. Join this established and highly regarded research team at the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology and conduct quality research into understanding the processes that regulate metabolic health in motor neuron disease (MND).
Key responsibilities will include:
- Provide technical/administrative support to undertake research projects with guidance from senior staff into metabolic dynamics in human research participants - this includes all administrative tasks associated with the conduct of this research
- Processing, inventory, tracking and/or shipment of human biological samples as per International Conference on Harmonisation-Good Clinical Practice (ICH-GCP) guidelines
- Draft reports resulting from these related activities (including surveys, investigations, tests, observations)
- Assist with the training and supervision of researchers and students conducting research activities
- Prepare, set up, clear away and/or dispose of chemicals, equipment, instruments and demonstrations
- Ensure a high standard of laboratory housekeeping (including maintainance, service, repair and calibration of laboratory equipment), waste disposal, sample storage and management and chemical inventory management is implemented
- Maintain a full working knowledge of the methodologies and equipment utilised in the laboratories
- Assist in the development of testing procedures and methodologies, including analysis of the quality and acceptance of existing procedures
- Troubleshoot issues with experiments and equipment
- Any other duties as reasonably required by your supervisor
Safety
- Ensure a high standard of occupational health and safety, risks analysis/mitigation and standards and systems, including inductions, supervision, equipment training registers, administration of Laboratory/Facility Inventories, reporting and investigating injuries, incidents and hazards
- Monitor compliance with University laboratory requirements, including supporting laboratory audit processes and quarantine procedures, such as internal and external laboratory compliance checks
- Ensure safe design principles are applied to the activities of the Laboratory/Facility
Operational and Administration
- Coordinate laboratory equipment requests, maintain consumables and other items required to meet planned activities and undertake inventory functions, ensuring that periodic audit items and maintenance schedules are met
- Contribute to development of laboratory budget planning with regard to laboratory consumables, equipment, facilities maintenance and service contracts, as well as undertake procurement activities as required
- Assist with supervision of casual laboratory support staff
- Liaise with internal and external clients

- Completion of a relevant degree in neuroscience, biomedical science, or physiology with subsequent experience in coordinating facilities or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
- Experience with working in a clinical research setting, including scheduling and managing research participant involvement
- Experience in assessing energy expenditure in human participants, and demonstrated knowledge and skills associated with a range of laboratory equipment for these purposes (e.g. body composition analyses, indirect calorimetry)
- Experience in phlebotomy
- Experience in assessing respiratory function (i.e. spirometry)
- Experience with writing and submitting human ethics applications/modifications, as well as generating risk assessments and standard operating procedures
- Interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to present and discuss own research work and contribute to discussion of the work of others
- Detailed knowledge of legislative requirements and operating procedures for human research, including ethics and ICH-GCP guidelines.
The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, education check, criminal history check, mandatory immunisations etc.
