Bendigo Health ICU is one of the busiest regional/rural units in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand, admitting over 1100 patients annually and responding to more than 1800 MET and Code Blue calls. The unit operates at a level equivalent to metropolitan services.
This role is open to post-Fellowship trainees seeking to strengthen non-clinical skills, and to experienced CMOs seeking senior responsibilities. The position offers increased clinical autonomy in preparation for a junior consultant role, with duties split across clinical (80%) and non-clinical (20%) responsibilities.
The unit would consider anyone who is currently sitting their fellowship exam and expecting to pass the oral component.
Part-time and job-share applications are welcome, subject to EBA and CICM requirements.
Clinical responsibilities include:
Leading handovers and ward rounds with junior staff
Managing critically ill patients with consultant support and graded autonomy
Coordinating workflow of junior registrars/residents
Participating in the consultant on-call roster (with second-on-call support)
Supporting Code Blue, MET, trauma and outreach activities
Non-clinical responsibilities include:
Teaching and supervising medical students, registrars, residents, and nursing staff
Contributing to ICU education programs, simulation, and courses (e.g. BASIC, APLS)
Involvement in recruitment, QA/governance activities, M&M meetings, and audit
Supporting research and ANZICS CTG trials
Participation in ICU leadership and planning meetings
By the end of the term, you will have developed the skills and confidence required for independent junior consultant practice.
