We are seeking a skilled AO4 Finance Officer to join a dynamic team within the Queensland Government on a temporary 3-month contract based in Townsville, with potential for extension for the right candidate. In this role, you will deliver high-quality financial administrative support and related services to Centre staff, contributing to the effective management, care, and supervision of young people.

Your new role

As the Finance and Administration Officer, you will play a vital role in supporting the operational and financial functions of the Youth Detention Centre. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Promoting cultural capability by demonstrating, or actively developing, an understanding of cultural diversity to foster an inclusive environment.
  • Managing financial processes, including the payment of accounts, monthly reconciliations, banking activities, and the monitoring of financial transactions.
  • Overseeing trust and petty cash accounts, ensuring accurate processing of reimbursements and timely reconciliations in accordance with financial procedures.
  • Coordinating processing requisitions and preparing purchase orders for goods and services (excluding stores and medical consumables), under the direction of the Manager, Finance and Administration.
  • Maintaining the asset register, coordinating regular stocktakes, and managing travel arrangements for young people, staff, and visitors.
  • Preparing reports and correspondence and maintaining the Centre's accountable documents register to ensure compliance and record-keeping standards are met.
  • Contributing as an effective team member, working collaboratively to deliver high-quality support and services to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Providing guidance and training to administrative and support staff on relevant systems and procedures used within the Centre.
  • Supporting financial planning, including assisting with budgeting processes and analysing the Centre's financial performance as required.

What you'll need to succeed

To be a successful applicant for this position, you will need to possess the following:

  • Prior experience in finance or a related field, with a strong understanding of financial operations and reporting.
  • High-level proficiency in Microsoft (especially Excel), with the ability to manage complex financial tasks.
  • Thorough knowledge of job costing procedures, ensuring accurate tracking and allocation of project-related expenses.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly and professionally.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues at all levels.
  • Strong leadership skills and capabilities.
  • Advanced organisational, administrative, and project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision, maintaining high standards of accuracy and accountability.
  • The ability to provide guidance and training to support staff.
  • Possession of a current Working with Children Check (Blue Card).

What you'll get in return

In return, you will gain a fantastic temporary opportunity with the possibility of extension or permanency for a prominent and active Queensland State government department. You will undertake a Monday – Friday position, with an immediate start. The general spread of working hours is 8am-4.30pm, and you will receive an attractive AO4 rate of pay, which is $59.16 per hour + Super.
