Primary objective
The Aboriginal Communicating for Safety Interpreter contributes to the provision of culturally appropriate health service provision to
Aboriginal patients and their families at Royal Darwin Palmerston Hospitals. This includes providing a relevant language service, cultural
brokerage, education, advocacy and support to Aboriginal patients and to all staff.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide interpreting service for Aboriginal patients and their families.
2. Provide cultural brokerage service to Aboriginal patients and their families, enabling them to engage in health care services.
3. Maintain the privacy and confidentiality of patients accessing the Royal Darwin Palmerston Hospitals.
4. Provide advice to health staff, on language and cultural factors supporting patient engagement and health care decision making.
- Participate in training health professionals on communication and cross-cultural issues to improve communication when delivering
health care and to reduce negative impact on patient outcomes.
6. Attend team meetings, training activities and supervision, contribute ideas and work collectively on team projects, and participate in
all activities the team engages in.
7. Foster a positive workplace culture and role modeling behaviour that support departmental values.
8. Follow defined service quality standards, Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) policies and procedures relating to the work being
undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Proven ability to engage, interact effectively and communicate in English and at least one Aboriginal language with Aboriginal patients
from diverse cultures in remote and urban locations.
- Proven knowledge and awareness of cultural and cross-cultural issues affecting Aboriginal people in todays society in health and
wellbeing.
3. Demonstrated effective personal and interpersonal skills, well developed oral and written communication skills to liaise with health
professionals and Aboriginal patients and their families.
- Follow the Code of Ethics for Interpreters, maintaining confidentiality, interpret accurately, objectively, impartially and act in a
professional manner at all times.
5. Confidence to speak English and/or language in public or in a group situation.
6. Knowledge and experience in using Microsoft computer programs including email and Microsoft Word.
7. Ability to organise and prioritise workload in a busy environment and ensure essential tasks are completed within designated time
frames.
Desirable
1. The ability to speak one of five, Northern Territory, Top End Aboriginal languages.
2. Qualification or the ability to obtain, a Diploma of Interpreting or National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters
