A key Queensland Government department is leading a transformation of the state's passenger rail network through unprecedented infrastructure investment. Our vision is to create connected communities in a sustainable, thriving, and inclusive Queensland, and we're looking for dedicated people to help us deliver it.
We are seeking a committed and proactive Principal WHS & Rail Safety Advisor to support major rail infrastructure projects under the new rail branch.
This is a hands-on, field-based role that offers the opportunity to provide visible safety leadership, influence culture, and drive rail safety best practices across major construction activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead from the Field – Conduct regular site walks, inspections and safety verifications across project worksites.
- Engage and Influence – Partner with contractors, Queensland Rail, and on-site teams to ensure safe systems of work are understood and implemented.
- Investigate and Improve – Respond to incidents, review investigations, and implement corrective actions that make a difference.
- Embed Risk Culture – Lead toolbox talks and risk assessments to promote strong safety behaviours.
- Deliver Assurance – Support the department's governance through audits, compliance checks, and system reviews.
- Report with Purpose – Translate real-time site insights into clear reports for senior leadership and continuous improvement.
About You
You are a skilled safety professional who thrives in both site-based and governance-focused environments. You're confident engaging directly with contractors and crews, and know how to turn safety policy into practical outcomes.
Essential:
- Tertiary qualifications in WHS, Business, or a related discipline.
- Strong understanding of WHS legislation, Rail Safety National Law, and safety standards (AS/ISO).
- Demonstrated experience with WHS systems and their practical application on infrastructure or rail projects.
- Ability to build relationships and influence behaviour through on-site presence.
- Excellent communication and reporting skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and digital safety reporting systems.
Desirable:
- Experience liaising with ONRSR and OFSC.
- Internal Auditor certification.
- ICAM Lead Investigator accreditation.
Why Work With Us?
- Play a key role in Queensland's largest rail investment pipeline leading into the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
- Join a workplace that values diversity, inclusion, and personal wellbeing.
- Access ongoing professional development, flexible work arrangements, and meaningful career growth.
