About the Northern Peninsula Area

Considered the gateway to the Torres Strait, the Northern Peninsula Area (NPA) region is a narrow peninsula bordered by the Coral Sea in the east, the Arafura Sea and Gulf of Carpentaria to the west and the Torres Strait to the north. The NPA region is made up of five First Nations communities; Injinoo, Umagico, Bamaga, New Mapoon and Seisia; each with its own history, languages and traditions strongly influenced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage. Many local families originate from Saibai Island and Badu Island, as well as many other islands in the Torres Strait.

Bamaga, located on the Jardine River, 850km north-west of Cairns by road, is the unofficial capital of the NPA. Today, Bamaga is home to approximately 1050 people of whom, more than 80% identify as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage.

Access is by road (during dry season) and by air all year round. Local amenities include a hospital, community health services, sporting facilities, IBIS grocery store, tourist accommodation and more. NPA is an Alcohol Management Plan community, with a hotel in the main street of town and an award winning licensed restaurant at the resort.

The Northern Peninsula Area (NPA) offers endless opportunities for outdoor activities like fishing, boating, and exploring stunning natural beauty.
