Role Overview

St Spyridon College is seeking an experienced, passionate and innovative educator to lead our Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) Team from Term 1, 2026. This pivotal leadership role provides an opportunity to shape learning across Years 7–12, mentor and inspire staff, and drive academic excellence in a dynamic and supportive environment.

Grounded in the College's focus areas and aligned with Orthodox values, the HSIE Curriculum Leader fosters a culture of collaboration, inquiry, innovation and continuous improvement in teaching and learning.

Key Accountabilities

As HSIE Curriculum Leader, you will:

  • Model, promote and encourage teaching excellence.
  • Provide inspirational leadership and strategic direction for the HSIE Department, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation and excellence.
  • Motivate and assist staff to adopt effective and contemporary teaching practices.
  • Oversee the delivery of engaging and rigorous programs across HSIE subjects, including Geography, Commerce, Business Studies, Economics, and Legal Studies.
  • Ensure all teaching and learning programs comply with NESA and College requirements, reflecting best practice in curriculum, assessment, and reporting.
  • Maintain strong communication with staff, students, parents, College leadership and external bodies to support student learning, engagement and wellbeing.
  • Work collaboratively and collegially with the Head of Studies to identify and respond to concerns, in a timely manner, applying fair and due process, in support of the best educational outcomes for the students of St Spyridon College.
  • Uphold the highest standards of student learning, engagement, inclusion and wellbeing.

Functions and Responsibilities

Leadership and Vision

  • Formulate and articulate a clear vision for HSIE teaching and learning at the College.
  • Inspire and lead a team of teachers to pursue excellence in pedagogy and student outcomes.
  • Build a culture of trust, collaboration and professional growth.
  • Mentor and support teachers in the development of exemplary pedagogy and professional growth.
  • Model leadership practices underpinned by emotional intelligence, including self-awareness, empathy, resilience and strong interpersonal skills.

Teaching and Learning

  • Lead the design, implementation and evaluation of curriculum, assessment, feedback and reporting.
  • Monitor and review the quality of teaching and learning using achievement data and feedback to drive improvement.
  • Encourage participation in co-curricular HSIE activities to enrich student learning.
  • Ensure staff respect, engage collaboratively and make appropriate adjustments for students with a disability.

Staff Development and Management

  • Induct, mentor and support new and early-career teachers.
  • Appraise staff and provide constructive feedback to support their professional growth.
  • Support staff accreditation and encourage engagement in professional learning opportunities.
  • Determine the allocation of teachers to courses and classes in accordance with school policy.
  • Facilitate effective, purposeful and time-efficient team meetings that focus on learning, growth and innovation, ensuring agendas, minutes and records are maintained.
  • Attend relevant meetings and professional development/learning events, including outside usual work hours.

Administration and Compliance

  • Ensure accurate record-keeping of programs, assessment data, student progress, and communications.
  • Store all documentation, programs, units of work and resources in line with College protocols.
  • Manage departmental budgets, resources and compliance processes.
  • Monitor and implement NESA updates, deadlines and requirements.
  • Manage and lead assessment tasks, delegating responsibilities fairly, equitably, and transparently.
  • Ensure assessment processes are reliable, valid, timely and compliant with NESA and College protocols.
  • Maintain accurate records of communications with parents and external stakeholders relevant to student wellbeing and educational outcomes, in line with College protocols.

Success Criteria

  • Proven leadership ability with a track record of successfully leading teaching teams.
  • Exemplary teaching practice in HSIE subjects, with experience across Stages 4–6.
  • Experience in HSC marking.
  • Deep knowledge of curriculum design, imminent curriculum reform, pedagogy, assessment, compliance requirements, and current educational trends.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build collaborative relationships across the College community.
  • Capacity to mentor, support and inspire staff in their professional growth.
  • Effective organisational skills, including resource and budget management.
  • High expectations for student learning, engagement and achievement.
  • Motivation, dedication and enthusiasm for learning.
  • Positivity, emotional intelligence, and the ability to function effectively in a dynamic, creative environment.
  • A strong work ethic, professional presentation and conduct.
  • Skills in problem-solving, guidance and direction.
  • Commitment to maintaining loyalty, confidentiality and support for the College.
