Engineering Team Lead

The Opportunity:

This high-growth fintech scale-up is revolutionising the digital payments space. Their API-first platform unites real-time rails with traditional methods, such as Direct Debit, BPAY, and FX, enabling seamless transactions and scalable payment experiences for millions of Australians.

They're now looking for a hands-on Engineering Team Lead who can provide technical leadership across backend APIs and full-stack delivery. A builder who thrives in the heat of product and sales demands while keeping the team focused, aligned, and shipping quality.

The challenge:

  • Own and drive backend/API development, ensuring scalability, reliability, and speed.
  • Support and unblock frontend engineers, taking responsibility for integrations and technical direction
  • Partner with Product and Sales, going "into battle" to balance business requests with technical feasibility
  • Maintain and extend a strong design system, ensuring ownership remains as features and customer expectations evolve.
  • Build momentum: the current portal is well-structured, but new demand means sharper execution and faster delivery are essential.
  • Lead a small, lean team (4 engineers + offshore QA), while recruiting the right talent to grow capability.

What you'll bring

  • 6–8+ years' experience in software engineering with strong backend/API depth and full-stack capability
  • Proficiency in .NET and API-first system design, with solid frontend knowledge (React, TypeScript)
  • Experience working in high-volume transaction or payments environments
  • Proven ability to support frontend developers and set technical direction in lean teams
  • Comfort balancing product and sales pressure with engineering priorities
  • Hands-on leadership style — still close to the code, but strong in coaching and decision-making
  • Familiarity with cloud-native systems, microservices, CI/CD, and observability tools
