We are seeking a passionate and experienced Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) to lead the establishment of a Vascular Access Specialist Team (VAST) at Peter Mac.
In this pivotal role, you will apply your advanced clinical expertise to develop and lead a nurse-led vascular access service. You will provide strategic and clinical leadership, driving excellence in vascular health assessment, access device selection, insertion, and ongoing management for our cancer patients.
Key responsibilities include:
• Leading the development and implementation of a high-performing VAST service
• Providing clinical leadership, education, and strategic direction across the service
• Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure best practice vascular access care
• Embedding evidence-based protocols for device selection, ultrasound-guided PIVC (USG PIVC), and nurse-led central venous access device (CVAD) insertion
• Fostering a culture of continuous improvement and clinical excellence in oncology vascular access
About You:
• Advanced nursing skills and experience in vascular access, particularly in an oncology or acute care setting
• Postgraduate qualifications in an advanced nursing specialty, preferably at Master's level
• Proficiency in USG PIVC and nurse-led CVAD insertion
• Demonstrated leadership in service development or clinical innovation
• Excellent communication, education, and stakeholder engagement skills
• Passionate about improving patient outcomes through expert vascular access care

Position SummaryThe Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) - Vascular Access is an advanced nursing professional who applies clinical leadership and educational skills to the development, delivery and sustainability of a Vascular Access Specialist Team (VAST) within the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre (Peter Mac).
The CNC- VAST will provide expert clinical leadership, consultation, and education and will build a high functioning vascular access team. The CNC – VAST collaborates with essential organisation wide stakeholders, to oversee excellence and deliver comprehensive care in vascular health assessment, access device selection, insertion and management at Peter Mac and will foster a culture of continuous improvement. The role will contribute to the advancement of nursing practice in central venous access devices (CVAD) and access management. This includes development, delivery and sustainability of clinical escalation pathways and development of a nurse-led CVAD insertion service. The position holder will be a dynamic and highly skilled expert with insertion, assessment and management of vascular access devices including Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) and midlines as well as difficult peripheral cannulations.

Skills
Essential Requirements
- Registered Nurse (AHPRA).
- Postgraduate Qualification in Oncology Nursing, Advanced Practice Nursing, or related field.
- Minimum five years' experience in oncology nursing, predominantly in a senior role
- Proficiency in ultrasound guided PIVC insertion and teaching.
- Demonstrated advanced knowledge with CVAD management and vascular access.
- Experience in implementing and managing change initiatives and innovations, with a focus on improving clinical outcomes and service delivery.
- Evidence of leadership in applying evidence-based practice and critical appraisal of research findings to inform practice.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey complex clinical information to a diverse audience.
- A proven ability to lead a high performing team and work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams, fostering a culture of teamwork and shared responsibility for patient care.
- Advanced patient assessment and management knowledge and skills relevant to vascular access and cancer care.
- Demonstrated active involvement in professional activities and organisations relevant to role e.g., AVATAR, and CNSA, WoCoVA.
- Well developed leadership skills with experience in providing clinical supervision, guidance, and mentorship to nursing staff.
Desirable Requirements
- An understanding of and experience with developing evidence-based practice and practice change and development.
- Experience with vascular access insertion, including PICC insertion and midlines or working towards.
- Experience with clinical education and training - vascular access
- Experience in providing expert consultation to resolve clinical issues and improve patient care processes.
Key Accountabilities
1. Strategic
- Provides clinical leadership and maintains clinical standards, collaborating on relevant practice auditing and monitoring, policy development and change management relevant to Vascular Access Specialist Team (VAST).
- Leads coordination and implementation of vascular access research quality improvement activities in collaboration with the Vascular Access Committee.
- Collaborates and applies effective change management strategies to develop expert vascular access practice within Peter Mac with stakeholders.
- In conjunction with relevant Peter Mac Education specialists and other stakeholders, develops, implements, and evaluates multi-disciplinary team (MDT) education and training programs for vascular access.
- Develops innovative techniques for complex problem solving for relevant function and speciality within the health service.
2.Clinical & Governance
- Provides clinical leadership through formation and clinical leadership of a dedicated vascular access committee to establish, monitor, evaluate and maintain KPIs and related activities for vascular access at Peter Mac
- Initiates and analyses research to inform clinical best practice in vascular access at Peter Mac.
- Translates research findings into clinical practice, contributing to the advancement of nursing knowledge and patient care outcomes.
- Leads and evaluates evidence-based standards and policies that inform best practice and quality clinical decision making.
- In collaboration with stakeholders maintains policies, procedures, practice, products, and professional standards in line with National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSHQS) clinical care standards and national and international evidence-based and consensus-based guidelines in vascular access assessment and management.
- Evidence of involvement in the development and/or recognition and/or evaluation of evidence-based patient education resources.
- Establishes and provides clinical leadership within health service vascular access governance committee and relevant work groups.
- Provides expert consultation advice and clinical leadership for nursing staff that supports learning and fosters a culture of inquiry and evidence-based practice.
3.Teamwork and Communication
- Effectively engages with key internal and external stakeholders to support excellence in vascular access practices at Peter Mac
- Enable and support effective communication across departments through appropriate and effective interpersonal behaviour and leadership.
- Maintains excellence in interpersonal skills to guide appropriate patient care and service delivery.
