We have three newly created roles, each on a full time 12-month contract dedicated to the Queensland Hydro mandate with Queensland Treasury. Based in Queensland Hydro, all three roles are critical to the success of the transformational Borumba Pumped Hydro Energy Storage ("PHES") project.

About the Project:

The Borumba PHES Project is a flagship greenfield project designed to support Australia's transition to a renewable energy future. With a focus on sustainable power generation, energy storage, and regional development, this project offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge engineering, commercial, financial and environmental solutions that will power generations to come.

About the Roles:

Manager

  • Debt analysis – including ability to evaluate debt term scenarios and the impact of various commercial revenue agreements on debt.
  • Assist in the development of the commercial and financial components of the Borumba PHES Project detailed investment and procurement business case.
  • Engage closely and collaboratively with the Queensland Hydro management team, board, and external consultants.
  • Support the Principal with asset management tasks.
  • Prepare analysis and reports for QIC nominee directors on Queensland Hydro, as required.

Key requirements:

  • Proven experience building complex financial models from scratch (DCF, project finance, IRR/NPV, sensitivities).
  • Proven ability to assess project finance options, across various procurement models including PPPs, and various regulated assets.
  • Experience with knowledge of the NEM, long-duration storage business models, PPAs, tolling agreements, capacity/firming contracts, and revenue floor instruments.
  • Advanced project finance and greenfield renewable energy financial modelling skills.

Principal

  • Strengthen organisational governance by reviewing and enhancing key policies and charters.
  • Engage directly with management to embed a strong risk culture.
  • Track record working on large energy infrastructure deals - experience in commercial roles on renewable, gas, hydro, or transmission projects.
  • Prepare regular and ad hoc reports for internal QIC stakeholders
  • Collaborate with QIC internal specialists across legal, tax, accounting, debt finance, and ESG workstreams.
  • Prepare analysis and reports for QIC nominee directors on Queensland Hydro as required.

Key requirements:

  • Understanding of renewable energy business models - knowledge of how wind, solar, storage, and PHES projects generate revenue (including merchant vs contracted models).
  • Ability to work with the business to identify and implement asset management initiatives to protect and enhance value in Queensland Hydro.
  • Experience working on major greenfield projects are key.

Senior Principal

  • Prepare detailed and timely assessments of potential revenue counterparties for the Borumba PHES Project using models such as PPAs and other offtake structures.
  • Consider a broad range of counterparties, including traditional Government-Owned Corporations (GOCs), energy retailers, other government entities, mining and resource companies, industrial users, and innovative players such as global technology or data centre companies.
  • Appreciation of how a portfolio of electricity derivatives can provide additional revenue certainty but also potentially create basis risk.
  • Appreciation of market risk management policies and processes that need to be in place to manage a business that utilises a mix of long and short-term contracting to secure its revenues.
  • Strategically craft and present investment strategy, risk profiles, and revenue models to internal and external stakeholders (including board and government funders).
  • Prepare analysis and reports for QIC nominee directors on Queensland Hydro, as required.

Requirements:

  • Experiences in working with support programs such as ARENA grants, CEFC funding, Capacity Investment Scheme etc.
  • Experience in accessing funding from capital markets.
  • Have a detailed understanding of (1) market rules, dispatch, price volatility, and ancillary services, (2) electricity derivative markets (Futures and OTC).
  • Experience with AEMO interactions, bidding strategy, and energy market modelling.
  • Detailed knowledge of the NEM, debt structuring for large greenfield infrastructure projects and support programs like Capacity Investment Scheme.
  • Experience structuring and negotiating energy offtake agreements, and working across various infrastructure models such as PPPs, concessions, tolling assets and regulated assets etc.

All Three Roles Require:

  • Understanding of renewable energy business models and the Australian energy market dynamics.
  • Proven experience in large energy infrastructure deals or projects (hydro preferred, but not required).
  • Experience in accessing capital markets for funding projects.
  • Proven ability to apply advance analytical skills in order identify and analyse issues and solutions.
  • Demonstrates high-level commercial acumen with proven strengths in proactive time management, strategic decision-making, stakeholder relationship management, negotiation and influence.
