The St Vincent de Paul Society aspires to be recognised as a caring charity offering "a hand up" to people in need. We do this by respecting their dignity, sharing our hope, and encouraging them to take control of their own destiny.

The Society seeks to fill Support Worker roles at Amelie House. Amelie House is a transitional housing facility for women that offers accommodation for up to 43 women experiencing or at risk of homelessness in Hobart.

The Support Worker will assist in providing a safe and supportive service, encouraging and assisting residents on a path towards independence and longer-term housing.

A key part of this role is the hands-on support of residents from referral through to intake, when residing with us, and then when preparing for their next accommodation. Support includes offering residents appropriate assistance with building a new routine for daily living, emotional support, mentoring to achieve independence and encouraging overall wellbeing in getting life back on track. This role is pivotal to delivering positive outcomes for our residents during their stay.

The Support Workers will operate on a 24/7, 4 on/4 off roster with varying shift times. Availability for all shift times and days is preferred and this will be discussed with candidates who work through the various stages of recruitment beyond an initial application.

  • Understanding of the current housing crisis, the experience of homelessness, and the barriers faced in overcoming associated challenges.
  • Experience in providing hands-on services and/or support through a collaborative style that is focused on delivering positive, person-centred outcomes.
  • Ability to work as part of a cohesive team, taking a supportive approach to engaging with colleagues and residents that embraces trauma-informed care and support.
  • Experience in creating meaningful stakeholder relationships within the community services industry and across broader networks throughout the community.
  • Exceptional time management skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to communicate with a wide range of cohorts, displaying empathy and fairness in all interactions.
  • Strong commitment to confidentiality and an understanding of privacy principles.
  • Sound administrative capacity and the ability to adapt to and learn new platforms quickly.
  • Commitment to work together with the greater SVDP Tas team in achieving against strategic and operational plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to changes in work priorities, styles and environment, recognising the need to be responsive in a context that can change rapidly.

This role is vital to the success of our accommodation services. If you're seeking to make a significant difference in your community, then we would love to hear from you.  The St Vincent de Paul Society is more than just a workplace - our collective commitment to social justice is reflected in our values and mirrored in our culture.

The Society is committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace and to upholding the safety, wellbeing and cultural security of all children, young people, and adults at risk. We promote a culture of safeguarding with a zero-tolerance approach to abuse and harm. Safeguarding is recognised as a fundamental aspect of our work in providing a hand up to those facing adversity.
