About the role

As part of the Office of the Secretary, the Strategic Governance team has a high profile within the Department of Education and plays a critical role to support the delivery of programs of work that are delivering the department's highest priority objectives. 

 As Assistant Portfolio Officer, you will provide essential secretariat services to Executive committees, enabling the delivery of our key objectives. Your core responsibilities will include coordinating executive meetings, managing records and correspondence, undertaking research, preparing agendas and minutes, and liaising effectively with diverse stakeholders. Operating in a fast-paced environment, you will assist the team in delivering portfolio-related projects while navigating tight deadlines, competing priorities, and multiple stakeholders. This role offers the opportunity to contribute significantly to public education in NSW while actively upholding our commitment to Aboriginal education and the value of public services.

About you

  • Demonstrated experience in providing high-level administrative support, including coordinating executive meetings, managing records, and preparing agendas, minutes, and correspondence accurately and efficiently.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet tight deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment with limited resources.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to liaise professionally and build positive relationships with diverse internal and external stakeholders. Active listening and clear, concise writing are essential.
  • Proven ability to work effectively within a team, share information, support colleagues, and contribute to achieving shared goals.
  • Capacity to thrive under pressure, manage competing demands constructively, and adapt to changing circumstances.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Knowledge of and commitment to implementing the Department's Aboriginal Education Policy and upholding the Department's Partnership Agreement with the NSW AECG and to ensure quality outcomes for Aboriginal people.

Essential requirements of the role

  • A valid Working with Children Check Clearance for paid employment
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the value of public education.

There is no requirement to renew the WWCC once it expires after five years. Employer obligations under the WWCC will apply only for the duration of its validity, up to five years.
