ResponsibilitiesWhat's the Senior Principal Engineer role? As an engineer well into your career, we know you're an expert at what you do and have a breadth of experience across multiple backend technologies. You take pride in working across departments to deliver transformational solutions that scale an entire company. You know how to introduce new technologies and methodologies and working across the organization and company to deploy them in a safe, performant way. You enjoy working with other Principals and more junior members look up to and sharing your expertise with others... That's why we're placing a heavy emphasis on leaning on your expertise to take on a high level of responsibility while being a role model and mentor to others on the team.
Collaborate with partner teams and internal customers to help define technical direction and OKRs for the Central Compute organization.
Regularly tackle the largest and most complex problems on the team, from technical design to implementation and launch
Work across engineering teams to efficiently adopt new technologies and solution. Expert at fast and safe adoption of new technologies.
Partner across engineering teams to take on company-wide initiatives spanning multiple projects
Routinely tackle complex architecture challenges and apply architectural standards and start using them on new projects
Work across senior engineering and product leaders to build strategy and design solutions to earn customers trust and business
Own key OKRs and end-to-end outcomes of critical projects in a microservices environment
Champion best practices and innovative techniques for scalability, reliability, and performance optimizations.
Own engineering and operational excellence for the health of our systems and processes. Proactively drive opportunities for continuous improvements and own key operational metrics.
Continually drive developer productivity initiatives to ensure that we unleash the potential of our own teams.
Help hire and mentor engineers to build an open, innovative and operationally responsible culture.
On your first day, we'll expect you to have:
Deep technical expertise and 10+ years of experience designing/building enterprise-grade platforms. Fluency in the current landscape (compute technologies including containerized and serverless architecture)
Experience understanding teams' pain points increasing dev productivity
A track record driving resolution of extremely complex issues, from deep-diving into an important customer issue all the way to driving its resolution within the engineering team of a vendor.
Experience with infrastructure at a scale that pushes the vendor limits. You know how to design systems that will gracefully tolerate hitting unknown limits and have experience with architectures that allow to overtake those limits such as sharding and cell-based architecture.
Experience recognising, raising, and reconciling gaps and opportunities across organizations
The energy and desire to excel in a rapidly-evolving organization; balancing multiple projects under pressure
Experience designing and building scalable infrastructure platforms used by hundreds of service owners
Passion to lead Atlassian's technical direction - driving service architecture through collaboration across multiple departments, each of which has hundreds of developers
It's great to have:
Experience with public cloud (we're on AWS, but we also believe skills with other cloud providers are transferrable)
Experience with Kubernetes, Service Mesh technologies
Experience with cloud data and storage technologies
Experience in networking technologies, cloud security, and reliability
