Technical Lead – Cloud & Data Platform Modernisation (Sydney | Hybrid)

We're partnering with a
globally recognised financial services organisation
that's doing digital differently combining the agility of a startup with the scale and security of a major enterprise. Their technology teams are empowered to innovate, experiment, and shape the systems that power millions of customer transactions every day.

They're currently embarking on a
major multi-year cloud modernisation initiative
rebuilding a core data platform from the ground up using modern, event-driven architecture on Google Cloud Platform.

This is a
hands-on technical leadership role
, ideal for someone who loves solving complex engineering challenges, driving architectural decisions, and building high-performance systems that make a tangible impact.

What You'll Do

  • Lead the design and delivery of
    scalable, distributed backend services
    in a high-volume environment.
  • Help
    decommission legacy data systems
    and migrate workloads to a
    cloud-native distributed database platform
    .
  • Drive re-architecture initiatives leveraging
    event-driven patterns
    (Kafka / PubSub).
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of
    GraphQL APIs
    and
    real-time data pipelines
    .
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to understand system dependencies and ensure seamless migration.
  • Identify opportunities to
    optimise performance
    , reduce technical debt, and introduce
    modern development practices
    .
  • Mentor engineers and provide technical direction within an agile, empowered environment.
  • Champion
    AI-assisted development tools
    to boost productivity and code quality.

Tech Environment

  • Languages:
    Java (primary), Kotlin (nice to have)
  • Cloud:
    Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
  • Databases:
    Cloud Spanner, Elasticsearch, Cassandra (legacy)
  • Event Streaming:
    Kafka, Pub/Sub
  • APIs:
    GraphQL, REST
  • DevOps:
    Git, Docker, CI/CD pipelines
  • AI & Productivity Tools:
    Copilot, Vertex AI, Claude, Recode

Nice to have:

  • Experience with
    Google Spanner
    or other distributed databases.
