Be a School Principal and Lead, Learn, Live in Tasmania
Join the Tasmanian Department for Education, Children and Young People (DECYP) and make a difference
About Us
We are a connected and values-driven community, united by a shared commitment to putting children and young people first. Across Tasmania's 192 unique schools—each with its own context and character—we work to ensure every learner is known, safe, well, and learning.
As a principal, you play a vital role at the heart of this critical work. Your voice is central to shaping our education system, and your leadership is guided by the same principles that define our department. You will model and foster a growth mindset, lead your school improvement plan with purpose, and align your efforts with the department's strategic priorities.
Through your inspirational leadership, you will cultivate a positive culture and a collaborative environment among students, families, staff, and colleague principals. Every day, in meaningful and dynamic ways, you will champion student learning and drive improved educational outcomes for every child and young person in your care.
Support and Ways Schools Operate
The Communities of Schools and Child and Family Learning Centres (CoSC) initiative is reshaping how education is delivered across Tasmania by bringing together small groups of schools and CFLCs under shared leadership, led by an Educational Leader for each community.
This initiative, planned for full implementation in 2026, brings small groups of schools and CFLCs together under executive leadership to enhance practice, scale success, share resources, and work collaboratively to improve outcomes for learners.
This model fosters a strong sense of community and joint accountability, encouraging schools and centres to build deeper connections within their local areas and with each other to ensure every child and young person is known, safe, well, and learning. It also provides clear points of contact and shared responsibilities that reduce administrative burdens on principals and staff, allowing them to focus more on instructional leadership and student outcomes.
By streamlining layers between the classroom and the broader system, CoSC enhances operational efficiency, improves resource allocation, and supports more consistent engagement with external stakeholders. This collaborative and adaptive approach is being implemented in phases, with ongoing feedback to ensure it meets the evolving needs of schools, staff, and communities.
