Mortuary & Transfer Technician
(Mortuary, Transfers & Operations – Casual Role)
About Us
Signature Funeral Services is a respected independent funeral home dedicated to providing dignified care for families and their loved ones. We are seeking a physically capable, confident individual who can learn quickly, take initiative, and step into a critical operational role.
The Role
This is a hands-on position that combines mortuary care, hospital/residential transfers, and funeral grave setups/breakdowns, with some basic document handling connected to transfers. You will be part of a professional team supporting our operations while ensuring respectful handling of the deceased in all circumstances.
Key Responsibilities
- Preparation and dressing of the deceased in the mortuary (including sensitive or decomposed cases).
- Applying cosmetics and ensuring dignified presentation of the deceased.
- Transfers from major hospitals (RAH, QEH, FMC, Modbury, Lyell McEwen), forensic facilities, nursing homes, and private residences.
- Safe operation and maintenance of mortuary equipment (Ferno barouches/cots, stretchers, etc.).
- Physical setup and breakdown of gravesites (canopies, chairs, PA systems, grave markers, and related equipment).
- Basic document handling: collecting transfer paperwork (Form 3, Form 4, Form 7), scanning documents to USB, and printing simple forms such as Transfer Requests or Mortuary Instructions from a dedicated computer folder.
- Use of basic tools (e.g. cordless power screwdriver) for equipment and mortuary-related tasks.
- Monitoring and maintaining essential mortuary supplies (e.g. PPE, cleaning products).
What We're Looking For
- Strong physical fitness and ability to manage demanding manual handling tasks.
- Confidence and attention to detail in applying cosmetics to the deceased.
- Calm, professional approach in all situations, including when handling decomposed or complex cases.
- Practical skills and mechanical intuition — able to safely use and maintain equipment and tools.
- A "can-do" attitude: resilient, adaptable, and willing to step in without hesitation.
- Comfortable with very basic computer use (printing and scanning documents to USB).
- Current driver's licence, with confident ability to safely reverse vehicles into tight spaces using mirrors (e.g. hospital and mortuary access areas).
- A quick learner who can pick up new tasks and procedures efficiently, with confidence and initiative.
- Commitment to confidentiality and respect in all aspects of the role.
- Ability to work independently in the mortuary and on tasks without close supervision.
- Reliability and consistent availability during scheduled hours.
- Professional conduct at all times, including limited personal phone use while on duty.
Why Join Us?
- Be part of a supportive, purpose-driven team.
- Work across varied environments — mortuary, hospitals, homes, and gravesites.
- Training provided in specialist areas (mortuary procedures, safe transfers, equipment use, graveside setup, document handling).
- Meaningful work that directly supports families during their most difficult time.
