As a senior building engineering consultant, you will receive ongoing professional development to enhance your skills and knowledge and you will be connected to a network of highly skilled building and engineering consultants.
POSITION OUTLINE
You will use your eye for detail and have sound written skills in order to inspect and report on engineering building defects and problems, and provide generalised recommendations for remediation where necessary.
The role is client-facing and involves a high level of inter-personal skills to successfully navigate complex situations, frequently in dispute. You will bring your in-depth knowledge of building construction to accurately identify problems and establish solutions in order to navigate a fair and reasonable way forward.
You will be a highly competent expert witness and you will naturally adopt the company mantra of "First we listen – then we advise"
The role is a combination of site inspections and report writing and you will receive training and ongoing support to ensure your continued career development.
The position reports to the engineering manager.
A pathway from senior building engineer to a management position exists for the right candidate.
Remuneration: commensurate with experience.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
· Technical expertise: employ your in-depth knowledge of construction principles of residential and commercial construction, building codes, regulations, and industry best practices to make informed decisions and solve complex issues regarding building problems. Specific competency in the NCC, and standards: AS1170 (series), AS2870, AS3600, AS3700, AS4100.
· Client engagement: Maintain open lines of communication, address concerns, and provide relevant information. Manage conflict when needed.
· Reporting: Prepare comprehensive reports, including clearly stating and demonstrating problems and providing accurate and reasonable recommendations, including costings when needed. Experience in concise, evidence-based forensic reports, including defect descriptions, causation analysis, liability commentary (where appropriate), assess performance solutions and provide remedial scope with prioritised actions with awareness of construction costs.
· Continuous improvement: Commitment to staying updated on relevant building codes and industry best practice. Readily integrate changes into your practice and be open to constructive feedback.
· Problem solving: Tackle unexpected challenges creatively and efficiently, making sound decisions that align with BSS' values and process'.
· Adhere to OH&S standards: Uphold BSS'OH&S policies and contribute to fostering a safety-conscious environment by proactively identifying and mitigating risks, cultivating a culture of well-being, and staying updated with the latest advancements in safety practices
REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES
- Registered engineer (civil/structural) (either BLA or Chartered) with experience in residential and commercial building construction.
- Proven track record in the building industry, with minimum 10 years' post graduate experience, ideally with design experience and practical application in residential and commercial construction.
- A solid background in report writing and ideallyexperience as an expert witness.
- Competent in Microsoft suite, minimum Word and Excel.
- In-depth understanding of building codes, regulations, and safety standards.
- Team player with strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Willingness to learn and adapt.
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Desire to grow with the company.
- Assisting with the growth of the engineering department.
- Your own presentable vehicle, and basic building inspection equipment.
- Timeliness: required to generally turn a report around within 5-10 business days.
