We have a current opportunity for a
Technical Publication Authoring and Writing Consultant
, on a contract basis within the Defence sector. The role is based in
Canberra, ACT
. The contract is for an
initial 6 month period, with a 2 x 12 month extension option
.

Start: circa 15 December 2025

DSS Skill Set: Level 4 - Technical - Publication Authoring

The Technical Writer will be responsible for, but not limited to the following duties:

  • analyse the development requirement for each publication;
  • develop author's briefs for each publication in the required format for endorsement by the publication sponsor;
  • facilitate publication working groups of key stakeholder organisations and selected subject matter experts when required;
  • author the publication in accordance with the agreed author's brief;
  • facilitate and develop the publication to the first draft stage;
  • facilitate and develop the publication to the final draft stage for sponsor approval;
  • liaise with the various stakeholders to facilitate comments on draft publications when required;
  • understand and incorporate existing and developing doctrinal concepts into relevant publications;
  • where relevant understand and incorporate the doctrine of our international partners;
  • where relevant propose the appropriate PUBTREE location;
  • where relevant ensure traceability to legislative/licensing obligations and any other requirements;
  • where relevant list interdependencies such a Defence doctrine, policy or manuals, technical standards, other publications or legislation;
  • prepare textual and graphical material for use in the compilation of new pages, replacement pages and/or supplementary pages; and
  • prepare publication preliminary pages, post pages, and/or instructions sheets.

Minimum mandatory requirements:

  • AGSVA Security clearance.
  • Defence experience.
  • Qualified and experienced in providing centralised, integrated, authorised, secure, and accessible and configuration controlled library.
  • Experience delivering technical publication authoring services to support technical doctrine publication development.
  • Experience translating complex technical information into a digestible format for non-technical audiences.
  • Experience authoring Technical policy to a publishing standard for an Enterprise Library.
