About the Role

We are expanding our team and invite applications for the position of Special Counsel to join our Workplace Relations & Safety group.

We offer a full-service employment law practice specialising in all aspects of workforce management - from employee engagements and contracts, industrial relations and workplace safety, to disputes, grievances and terminations.

Our employment lawyers offer more than just legal counsel; they develop targeted, cost-efficient solutions tailored to each client. By working in close partnership with clients, they formulate strategies to mitigate risks, deliver essential information, and reinforce safety and compliance efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Liaising extensively with clients and taking the lead on matters
  • Preparing written advices regarding all employment law related issues and industrial relations matters
  • Providing strategic advice regarding employment and industrial relations disputes
  • Engaging barristers and investigators and appearing at conferences before the relevant court or tribunal
  • Researching case law and providing legal analysis
  • Drafting court documents and settlement agreements
  • Instructing counsel and senior lawyers during court hearings, mediations and conferences and corresponding with opposing solicitors and self-represented applicants
  • Liaising with witnesses and drafting statements and affidavits
  • Delegating work and providing instructions to lawyers, paralegals and administrative support
  • Mentoring and coaching lawyers to support their development, including supporting graduates and seasonal clerks throughout their rotations
  • Retaining and building client relationships and business, including by managing certain client relationships
  • Participating in individual and group-wide business development activities

About You

  • Tertiary qualifications in Law, and a current Practising Certificate in the relevant jurisdiction, are essential for this position.
  • Candidates should bring a minimum of eight years' post-admission experience (PAE), with expertise in Employment Law, ideally gained within a law practice.
  • Demonstrate critical reasoning and investigative abilities, including a capacity to approach complex problems with creative and lateral thinking.
  • Proficiency in legal drafting, able to produce clear, precise, and effective documentation
  • Experience and a genuine enthusiasm for providing guidance, mentorship, and coaching to team members.
  • A strong customer service ethic to deliver outstanding service to clients and stakeholders.
  • Proven track record in developing and sustaining strong professional relationships, including the ability to earn the trust and confidence of key stakeholders.
  • Demonstrates strong written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to articulate complex concepts effectively to varied audiences.
  • Exceptional organisational skills, with the ability to plan and prioritise tasks to meet tight deadlines and key deliverables.
  • Experience in facilitating presentations and leading meetings with groups of varying sizes, adapting style and content to suit the audience.
  • Competence in working through complex problems, exercising sound judgement to determine when issues should be escalated for further review.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to working collaboratively to contribute to team objectives and overall success.
