This position plays a key role in the safe and efficient delivery of Tri-Star's petroleum operations by developing well programs, monitoring operations, analysing performance, and implementing continuous improvement initiatives. The Senior Wells Engineer works collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to ensure wells are designed, drilled, completed, and operated in accordance with Tri-Star's standards, regulatory requirements, and strategic objectives.
This role will manage a diverse group of technical skillsets and coordinate with other parts of the business to enable the organisation to deliver a consistent high level of performance in relation to HSSE, cycle time, optimised cost, operational efficiency and meeting of technical targets key to understanding future productivity. The role will involve field work from time to time.
Management of Risk and Health and Safety objectives
The position will demonstrate a visible commitment to Tri-Star's Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) standards by ensuring that all well engineering and operational activities are planned and executed with safety and environmental stewardship as primary considerations:
- Apply Tri-Star's HSE Management System (HSEMS) to identify, assess, and control hazards and operational risks to as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP).
- Integrate HSE principles into all stages of well planning, design, and execution to ensure safe and efficient operations.
- Support the Wells Engineering Manager and Health & Safety team in monitoring compliance with company HSE requirements and contractor safety performance.
- Prepare and review of risk assessments, safe systems of work, and operational procedures.
- Ensure all engineering designs and field programs incorporate appropriate barriers and controls to maintain well integrity and process safety.
- Lead incident investigations, HSE reviews, and lessons-learned sessions to drive continuous improvement.
- Promote a proactive HSE culture by encouraging open communication, hazard reporting, and visible leadership in safety.
- Provide technical input into assurance processes to verify the effectiveness of Tri-Star's HSEMS and associated procedures.
Well Planning Support and Coordination
- Prepare drilling, completions and intervention programmes and detailed operational procedures in compliance with Tri-Star policies and procedures:
- Ensure drilling programs are prepared on schedule, and program amendments are adequately risk assessed.
- Ensure data acquisition and well objectives are achieved through the implementation of appropriate well design and application of technology.
- Support the Chief Accounting Officer in the preparation and consolidation of WBS and associated control budget(s) consistent with business plan.
- Provide high-quality input to Authorisation for Expenditure (AFE's) as required.
- Conduct detailed engineering design of wellbores, completions, and surface production systems, incorporating offset well experience, well integrity, Tri-Star EMT objectives
Government Regulations and guidelines and well engineering standards.
- Perform engineering studies to optimise well design, cost efficiency, and operational performance.
- Ensure design compliance with regulatory frameworks, corporate standards, and well integrity principles.
Operations Surveillance and Coordination
- Plan, schedule, coordinate and monitor the execution of well construction activities to deliver Fit for Purpose, quality wells, on time and within budget.
- Coordinate with service providers, contractors, and logistics to ensure efficient mobilisation and execution.
- Review and validate contractor deliverables, equipment, and QA/QC documentation.
- Ensure compliance with Tri-Star's internal procedures, approvals, procurement, and management-of-change processes.
- Support the Wells Engineering Manager with progress reporting, cost tracking, and performance benchmarking.
- Regular visits to site to ensure contract compliance and performance.
- Monitor all phases of the field activities and/or drilling operations to ensure that they are conducted in accordance with the design objectives and approved program.
- Perform post-analyses of drilling activity to identify opportunities to implement appropriate new learnings and/or technologies that enhance future value.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to plan, schedule, and execute well operations safely, on time, and within budget.
- Provide daily engineering support for drilling and completion operations.
- Collect, analyse and quality control all data from the well activities.
Project Management
- Lead Engineering (drilling, completions, facilities) across Tri-Star Australia.
- Assist with communicating requirements to suppliers and ensure that suppliers are aligned with well goals and objectives.
- Ensure appropriate QA/QC and safety plans are in place and being followed by contractors.
- Comply with internal approvals, procurement, and change management processes.
- Facilitate end of well review meetings to assess technical, operational and financial performance.
- Analyse drilling reports, contract designs, equipment and other specs.
- Provide technical input into tender processes, contracts and service orders as required.
- Develop and oversee the execution of technical workflows relevant to the engineering discipline in line with Tri-Stars objectives
- Review and approve invoices for field activities in accordance with the Tri-Star Delegation of Authority manual and comply with internal Contracts, Procurement and Accounting processes.
- Generate progress reports, and relevant performance metrics to benchmark projects for continuous improvement and to communicate the status of the project to the wider Tri-Star team.
Design, Technical Assurance and Continuous Improvement
- Lead the development, review, and maintenance of well engineering standards, procedures, and technical guidelines to ensure consistency, compliance, and continuous improvement across Tri-Star's operations.
- Develop and optimise well designs in line with company policies and regulations to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective delivery of objectives.
- Determine completion strategy for Australian exploration/appraisal wells, identifying and introducing relevant new technologies as required.
- Maintain a well design delivery process and ensure strong MoC pre and post spud.
- Manage and allocate resources related to well engineering, completion engineering, well testing, production technology and offline interventions to ensure timely and cost-efficient execution of Tri-Star operations.
- Cost and performance tracking and reporting with preparation of documentation for management information and approval.
- Active involvement in contract strategy, tendering and potential negotiations in pursuit of drilling strategic objectives.
- Identification and scope definition for long lead equipment and contracts.
- Work with logistics providers and service contractors to ensure availability of equipment and consumables on time.
- Participate in peer reviews and assurance processes to uphold technical quality.
- Identify opportunities for innovation, cost reduction, and operational improvement through data analysis and benchmarking.
- Support training and knowledge-sharing initiatives within the Wells team.
Regulatory and Compliance
- Provide technical input to the Tenures group to ensure Government approvals for activities are submitted on time and approvals are in place so as not to cause delays to operations.
- Monitor Tri-Star operations and ensure they are conducted in strict accordance with all applicable Government regulations and requirements.
- Ensure all well engineering and operational activities comply with applicable laws, codes, and regulatory requirements.
- Support preparation of technical documentation and submissions to government authorities.
- Maintain awareness of evolving regulatory and industry standards relevant to well design and operations.
Business Development Support
- Provide technical input into business cases, tenders, and partner reviews as required.
- Contribute engineering expertise during due diligence, acquisitions, or farm-in evaluations.
- Support business development initiatives consistent with Tri-Star's strategic goals.
