Role

Thank you for your interest in the Director of Student Leadership and Voice position at Balwyn High School. We are seeking a high performing educational leader who can work collaboratively and effectively to make a positive and significant contribution to the academic outcomes and wellbeing of our students and community members.

The successful candidate for this position will be expected to be an active member of the school¿s Leadership Team. As an educational leader they will be committed to the leadership and management of change and continuous school improvement. They will have specific portfolio duties and will be actively involved in whole school leadership. As a member of the Leadership Team the educational leader will be committed to their own professional learning and creating and sustaining a performance and development culture. The successful candidate will take their place in a Leadership Team that prides itself on working collaboratively to support best practice.

Leading Teachers share responsibility for whole school improvement and effectiveness and for implementation of the school¿s Vision, Values and Mission. As an educational leader the Director of Student Leadership and Voice will be actively involved in leading and managing the creation of a learning community and the improvement of student learning outcomes. This requires high level commitment to the implementation of the School Strategic Plan¿s goals and priorities, and the strategic direction of the school.

A five-period time allowance is provided for this position. [Please note: we operate on a timetable of four 74 minute lessons per day].

Responsibilities

Responsibilities

Leadership & Coordination of Student Voice

  • Provide positive leadership in developing, coordinating and operating Student Leadership, SRC, student voice and community support structures.
  • Coordinate operations of the SRC and promote/facilitate Student Leadership/Voice with SRC Liaison teacher/s.
  • Liaise with the Principal, Assistant Principals, and Directors of Sub-schools to develop opportunities for student involvement in:
  • Curriculum decision-making
  • Assessment design
  • Pedagogical approaches
  • Work with the Principal and Sub-school Directors to select Student Leaders for the following year.
  • Ensure the school provides ongoing opportunities for student leadership and community involvement.

Partnerships & Events

  • Liaise with the Director of HOPES to coordinate annual House Carnivals, in partnership with House Coordinators and club/committee staff.
  • Support Senior Student Leaders in organising the Leaders¿ Forum and leadership development activities within the Boroondara Network.
  • Support the two student representatives on School Council in their role as community members.

Student Leadership Development & Support

  • Be a key resource for the school community in matters relating to SRC, Student Leadership/Voice, and community support initiatives.
  • Provide leadership training and induction for student leaders (e.g. public speaking, team building, meeting procedures, decision-making).
  • Support staff and students in clubs, committees, programs, and other leadership structures.

Data, Evaluation & Reporting

  • Assume responsibility (with the Assistant Principal) for the annual Attitudes to School Survey and conduct follow-up Focus Groups.
  • Formulate and present the Program Budget for Student Leadership/Voice to the Business Manager.
  • Ensure student leadership activities and initiatives are documented, promoted, and evaluated.

Tasks

Development & Coordination of Student Leadership Structures

  • Assist in developing and coordinating Student Leadership/Voice structures such as:
  • SRC
  • STEP
  • Interact
  • Social Justice Committee
  • Environment Committee
  • Facilitate effective functioning of SRC meetings.
  • Oversee SRC fundraising activities with the Assistant Principal, Business Manager, and SRC Liaison teachers.

Support for Leadership Programs & Initiatives

  • Support the Principal, AP (Teaching & Learning), and AP (Senior School) in the effective running of the Principal¿s Advisory Group.
  • Provide ongoing training and induction for student leaders in public speaking, leadership, team building, meeting procedures, and school decision-making.
  • Monitor and support liaison staff and student leaders in running clubs, committees, and programs.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with external agencies (Local/Victorian Government leadership initiatives).

Professional Development & Staff Support

  • Participate in professional development activities related to Student Leadership/Voice, SRC, and Community Support.
  • Provide professional development opportunities for staff in these areas.
  • Disseminate recommendations to relevant school bodies to strengthen Student Leadership/Voice.

Communication & Promotion

  • Contribute items to the school newsletter and publications on Student Leadership/Voice initiatives.
  • Promote student leadership activities at sub-school assemblies and other school events.
  • Encourage visibility and celebration of student-led contributions.

Budgeting & Administration

  • Prepare and administer the Student Leadership/Voice Program Budget.
  • Present recommendations and updates to the Principal and other appropriate bodies.

School & Community Engagement

  • Support school events (e.g. School Tours, Music Concerts, Production, Art Show), especially where Senior Student Captains are involved.
  • Strengthen connections between school leadership initiatives and broader community engagement.

Other Duties

  • Perform other duties as directed by the Principal.

VIT LANTITE

To be eligible for employment, transfer or promotion in the principal or teacher class a person must have provisional or full registration from the Victorian Institute of Teaching. In addition, from 3 August 2020, to be eligible for employment in the principal class or teacher class, a person who graduated from a Victorian Initial Teacher Education program after 1 July 2016, must demonstrate that they have passed the literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE) requirements. This condition is satisfied where the LANTITE requirement is part of the Victorian Initial Teacher Education program completed by the person.
