RoleThank you for your interest in this exciting Leading Teacher position. The successful candidate will be expected to be an active and dynamic member of the school¿s Leadership Team. As an educational leader the person will be committed to the leadership and management of change and the promotion of Balwyn High School as `the school of choice¿. The person will have specific portfolio duties and will be actively involved in whole school leadership. As a member of the Leadership Team the educational leader will be committed to their own professional learning and creating and sustaining a performance and development culture.
The Director will work closely with the Principal, Assistant Principal for Teaching and Learning, Directors of Sub schools, and our International Student Program (ISP) Director.
A five-period time allowance is provided for this position. [Please note: we operate on a timetable of four 74 minute lessons per day].
ResponsibilitiesPosition Breadth:
It is envisaged that the successful applicant will oversee responsibilities in the following main areas:
- Oversight of the ISP students¿ academic progress and ensuring that their learning needs are met by all their teachers
- Leadership of the school¿s Professional Learning programs which involve building the capacity of teaching staff to effectively support the learning and wellbeing needs of EAL learners
- Leadership of the English as an Additional Language (EAL) Learning Area to meet the needs of all EAL learners across the school
- Coordination of the exchange and immersion opportunities with the school¿s Sister Schools in China and Vietnam in conjunction with the Principal Team
Responsibilities
International Student Program (ISP)
- Work with the ISP Director on:
- selection of International students
- orientation of International students to the BHS program
- staffing and learning program for ISP students in the Language Centre
- monitoring ISP students¿ academic progress
- supporting teaching staff with responsibilities for ISP and EAL students
Curriculum Leadership & Development
- Provide overall leadership and coordination for the development, implementation and evaluation of EAL subjects in line with:
- Department of Education
- Victorian Curriculum
- School Council policies
- School Strategic Plan
- Actively participate in the implementation of the whole school curriculum plan
- Ensure quality assurance in curriculum design and delivery, based on research and learning theory
- Implement pedagogical reform for all staff teaching EAL learners
- Liaise with the Heads of Learning (especially the Director of English and Literacy) to address EAL students¿ needs
- Ensure the EAL program caters to varied abilities, learning styles and developmental stages
School Leadership & Contribution
- Be an active member of the Leadership Team, contributing to Strategic Plan goals and priorities
- Lead and support staff in embedding Vision and Values, Principles of Learning and Teaching, VTLM 2.0 and eLearning applications into the curriculum
- Oversee preparation of the Learning Areas Program Budget(s) for School Council
- Have overall responsibility for EAL Learning Area excursions, ensuring compliance with school and DE guidelines
Teacher Development & Support
- Proactively lead the improvement of teacher effectiveness through:
- Professional learning programs
- Performance and Development processes
- Model outstanding pedagogy and assessment practices for EAL staff and the wider school
- Provide, promote and monitor professional learning to improve teacher effectiveness
- Use student outcome data to inform curriculum design and staff feedback
- Foster a supportive, cohesive learning area team through consultative leadership
Tasks
Teaching & Instructional Support
- Assume a major teaching role within the Learning Area
- Support less experienced teachers with subject knowledge and classroom strategies
- Counsel staff on classroom management strategies (in collaboration with the Student Learning and Wellbeing Managers (SLWMs))
Learning Area Management
- Conduct formal Learning Area meetings to:
- Review curriculum content, pedagogy, wellbeing, assessment, etc.
- Provide professional learning and encourage sharing of best practice
- Support staff in sharing ideas, strategies and resources for classroom use
- Oversee and coordinate planning, writing, and reviewing units of study, aligned with best practice
- Monitor/review courses to ensure:
- Curriculum implementation
- Links between Years 7¿10 and VCE
- Strong connections with community and industry
- Maintain and update a Learning Area handbook (resources, processes, assessment, reporting)
- Consult with staff in preparing booklists
- Ensure provision of work for replacement teachers
- Organise and coordinate examinations in the Learning Area
- Consult with AP (Staffing/Timetable) regarding teaching allotments, management, and room allocations
- Oversee care of Learning Area rooms, storage, and resources (liaising with Facilities Manager as needed)
- Liaise with teacher librarians to further develop curriculum resources
Professional Development & External Engagement
- Encourage and support staff participation in professional learning opportunities
- Liaise with AP Teaching and Learning and Director of Pedagogy for staff development needs
- Coordinate participation in selected District, State, and National Subject Association activities
- Disseminate relevant information on teaching, learning, assessment, and reporting
- Ensure staff awareness of current educational theory, practice, and resources
Community, Culture & Representation
- Promote the International Student Program (ISP) to the school and broader community
- Encourage and facilitate display of student work
- Participate in school events beyond school hours, modelling school culture and ethos of excellence
Leadership & Administration
- Oversee submissions to Leadership Team meetings and liaise with Principal Team on teaching, learning, and reporting issues
- Attend Leadership Team meetings and contribute to school decision-making
- Perform other duties as directed by the Principal
Teachers currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and qualified to teach and/or have demonstrated experience in the curriculum area(s) specified for the position.

This condition is satisfied where the LANTITE requirement is part of the Victorian Initial Teacher Education program completed by the person.
