Long-term consulting role via Kotahi Consulting

Kotahi Consulting is seeking a Mechanical Engineer for a long-term secondment (12+ months) supporting the delivery of major Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP) shutdowns and capital projects at one of our client's Bowen Basin mines.

This embedded consulting role offers the chance to work directly with the Senior Project Manager and gain broad exposure to the full lifecycle of CHPP project delivery — from shutdown planning to execution and longer-term infrastructure development.

The Opportunity

Location: Lower Bowen Basin (FIFO ex Brisbane or DIDO Rockhampton or similar)

Start: 1-4 weeks

Duration: 12+ months

We're open to both experienced and junior mechanical engineers who are keen to grow their project and shutdown experience within a major mining operation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide mechanical engineering expertise during major CHPP shutdown planning and execution
  • Manage cost, scope, and quality control for critical shutdowns
  • Contribute to the 5-year fixed plant and infrastructure plan
  • Support delivery of smaller projects between shutdown periods
  • Interface with site, maintenance, and project delivery teams

About You

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Prior exposure to shutdowns, maintenance, or brownfield projects. Some mining experience would be beneficial (reflected in rate) but not essential
  • Must have Standard 11 and pass Coal Board Medical
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Able to work autonomously and respond under pressure during critical phases

Roster & Conditions

  • Fly to site on Monday and home on Thursday evening. Friday work from home.
  • Every fourth week is WFH.
  • Must be available for full duration of major shutdowns (incl weekends/nights as required)
  • Flights, car hire, accommodation, and meals provided
