Position Purpose

The Senior Consultant – Protective Urban Design plays a key role in Core42's mission to redefine how security and design coexist within the built environment. This position bridges urban design, architecture, and protective security, supporting clients to integrate safety and resilience principles without compromising design quality or community experience.

The role contributes to the strategic design and delivery of protective urban design strategies across major infrastructure, civic, and public-realm projects. It requires a professional who can move comfortably between conceptual design thinking, technical risk analysis, and stakeholder engagement — translating complex protective security requirements into design-integrated, human-centred outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

The Senior Consultant will be responsible for:

1. Technical Leadership and Delivery

Lead the development of protective urban design strategies for precincts, transport infrastructure, and civic environments.

Translate CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design), hostile vehicle mitigation, and protective security principles into practical, context-appropriate design solutions.

Conduct site assessments, risk-based analyses, and design reviews to ensure security measures support usability, accessibility, and place quality.

1. Design Integration and Collaboration

Work closely with architects, planners, landscape architects, engineers, and government agencies to embed protective design early in the design process.

Provide clear and constructive input during design reviews, tender evaluations, and planning submissions.

Advocate for evidence-based, design-led approaches that support both safety and public amenity.

1. Advisory and Communication

Prepare high-quality reports, design guidelines, and visual materials that communicate complex protective design concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Contribute to project presentations, client workshops, and inter-agency discussions to influence decision-making and foster collaboration.

Represent Core42's design and security philosophy in client engagements and industry forums.

1. Research, Mentorship, and Development

Mentor graduates and early-career consultants in protective design, analysis, and project delivery.

Contribute to Core42's internal research and knowledge frameworks, including its work on protective placemaking and resilience metrics.

Support thought leadership activities such as white papers, conference presentations, and publications.

1. Business Growth and Client Development

Assist in preparing proposals, scopes, and bids for design and advisory projects.

Identify opportunities to expand Core42's influence in protective design policy, standards, and practice.

Cultivate relationships with architects, developers, and public agencies to position Core42 as a trusted partner in security-by-design.

Skills and Experience

Essential

• Degree in Urban Design, Architecture, or Landscape Architecture (postgraduate qualifications desirable).
• 5–10 years' professional experience in urban design or related disciplines, ideally with exposure to civic, public-realm, or precinct-scale projects.
• Demonstrated interest in or knowledge of CPTED, protective security, and public space safety.
• Strong visual communication, analytical, and report-writing skills.
• Proven experience working collaboratively within
  multidisciplinary teams and engaging with a variety of stakeholder groups.

Desirable

• Experience in transport, civic, or critical infrastructure projects

• Familiarity with protective security standards, guidelines, or government policy frameworks (e.g., SOCI Act, ISO 31000, or CPTED Guidelines).
• Exposure to resilience planning, counter-terrorism design, or community safety initiatives.
• Understanding of how protective design intersects with ESG, sustainability, and resilience frameworks.
