About the Role We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Principal Communications Officer to join a progressive local council in Melbourne.

This temporary full-time position offers an exciting opportunity to lead strategic communications initiatives that support the council's goals and values.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Communications Planning: Develop and implement comprehensive communication strategies to support key projects and business activities, ensuring alignment with the council's objectives.
  • Content Creation & Management: Produce and manage engaging content for various platforms, including the council's corporate website, intranet, and dedicated project sites.
  • Media & Stakeholder Engagement: Proactively engage with traditional, digital, and social media channels; coordinate major external activities and media relations; and manage complex stakeholder relationships.
  • Project Management: Lead and coordinate strategic transformation communications projects, providing ongoing advice and ensuring effective delivery.
  • Supplier Liaison: Collaborate with suppliers and internal stakeholders to ensure adherence to the council's accessibility standards.

About You To be successful in this role, you will have:
  • Proven experience in strategic communications, preferably within a local government or public sector environment.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and content creation skills.
  • Strong project management capabilities with the ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
  • Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • A proactive approach to identifying and addressing reputational risks.
