Research Topic and Significance
The central focus of this PhD project is the development of efficient magnetocaloric materials for hydrogen liquefaction. Magnetocaloric materials exhibit temperature changes when exposed to magnetic fields, enabling magnetic refrigeration—a technology that offers significant advantages over conventional refrigeration methods, including higher energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact.

Hydrogen, as a clean and versatile energy carrier, is vital for the future of sustainable energy systems. However, liquefying hydrogen for storage and transport remains a major technical and economic challenge due to the high energy requirements of existing processes. By advancing the science of magnetocaloric materials, this project aims to transform hydrogen liquefaction, making it more efficient and eco-friendly. The outcomes of this research will contribute directly to global efforts to build sustainable energy infrastructure and combat climate change.

Project Details
This fully funded PhD position is based in the School of Chemistry and Physics at QUT, Brisbane. The project offers a generous stipend of AUD $37,000 per annum (indexed annually and tax exempt) and is open to both domestic and international students.
