The Opportunity:

One of Australia's largest retailers is modernising a critical .NET platform that underpins national fulfilment and store operations. Built years ago by a third-party vendor, the system is highly complex and carries significant technical debt. The team is now focused on improving its structure, maintenance, and evolution.

Some parts of the platform are already moving from on-premises to Azure, others are being refactored, decomposed or extended. This isn't a pure cloud migration role. It's a senior engineering role on a team actively fixing problems, cleaning up the architecture, and building better foundations while continuing to deliver features.

You'll work across a large, long-lived codebase, helping to:

  • Break down tightly coupled areas of a monolithic system.
  • Upgrade legacy .NET Framework components to modern .NET.
  • Improve service boundaries, data flows and API behaviour.
  • Support the gradual shift from SQL Server toward MySQL or PostgreSQL.
  • Improve performance, caching and reliability in a distributed, event-driven environment.
  • The work is predominantly backend, but there is some front-end modernisation as the stack evolves beyond older Angular.

What you'll do:

  • Own full-stack delivery across modern .NET services, APIs and supporting UI components.
  • Refactor and improve existing code, rather than rebuilding everything from scratch
  • Help modernise legacy services while keeping the platform stable and operational.
  • Improve system behaviour under load by improving data access, caching, and observability.
  • Build and operate services using Kubernetes, Service Bus, Functions, IaC and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Work closely with product, architects and engineers to sequence refactoring, migration and new feature work.

What you bring:

  • Strong commercial experience with C# and modern .NET, plus confidence working in older .NET Framework codebases
  • A track record of improving existing systems, whether through migration, refactoring or architectural cleanup
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems, microservices and asynchronous messaging
  • Experience with Azure or similar cloud platforms, and comfort picking up new services as needed
  • Hands-on exposure to containers, CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code (Kubernetes, Terraform, Bicep, Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions)
  • Strong SQL skills and experience working with relational data in complex systems
  • Some front-end experience with Angular and TypeScript, with flexibility to work across React or Blazor
  • Clear communication, good engineering judgement, and the ability to make messy systems better over time
