The Role- Health and Safety Lead (Projects)

Our client are a global clean energy solutions provider who are now seeking a proactive and committed Project HSE Lead to support the safe and successful delivery of a large-scale solar project near Dubbo/Wellington.

You will be responsible for the strategy, planning monitoring and improvement of HSE systems and practices ensuring compliance with Australian legislation and industry standards.

You will play a key role in developing a strong safety culture and ensuring HSE performance risks are managed throughout the project lifecycle, whilst also protecting the environment.

The ideal candidate will have experience in renewables, oil and gas however this is not compulsory for the role.

Your duties and responsibilities in your role as Health and Safety Lead:

  • Develop a project specific HSE strategy and plan, monitor progress and identify gaps and improvements
  • Develop project specific HSE Assurance programme
  • Drive compliance with Australian Work Health & Safety (WHS) legislation, environmental codes of practice, and relevant social performance regulations.
  • Analyse HSE performance records and trends, prepare regular reports, and track performance against project HSE KPIs.
  • Review effectiveness of contractor's HSE processes and procedures, identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Lead coordination of periodic HSE meetings with Project Management Team (PMT).
  • Review incident reports and emergency & crisis preparedness exercises
  • Monitor on-site construction activities (i.e. civil, electrical, mechanical, lifting, commissioning) to ensure safe and environmentally responsible practices.
  • Lead HSE inspections, risk assessments, and incident investigations, ensuring corrective actions are implemented.
  • Ensure environmental management plan are executed and environmental monitoring performed as per agreed timeline (e.g., dust, noise, waste, biodiversity protection).
  • Provide advisory on technical HSE (i.e. construction safety, health, biodiversity land use, heritage management and community engagement) and provide recommendations to ensure compliance with project approvals.
  • Promote a proactive safety and sustainability culture by engaging with site teams, contractors, and stakeholders.

To be successful in your role as HSE Lead, we are looking for the following experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), Environmental Science, or other related discipline.
  • Certificate IV or Diploma in Work Health and Safety (WHS) highly regarded, particularly within the Australian context.
  • Strong understanding of ISO Occupational Health & Safety) and ISO Environmental Management) systems, with demonstrated experience applying these standards on major projects.
  • 10+ years'+ experience in HSE roles within construction, energy, or infrastructure projects. Renewable energy is highly regarded, and a background in Oil & Gas is considered desirable.
  • Passionate about safety leadership and zero incident culture.
  • Solid working understanding of Australian WHS legislation, regulations, and codes of practice and Australian environmental codes and approvals framework (EPA, biodiversity, land use, waste management).
  • Social performance–related regulations, including Indigenous engagement, cultural heritage management, and community consultation obligations.
  • Demonstrated capability in risk management, incident investigation, compliance reporting, and contractor engagement.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels
  • Trained in incident investigation tools for example ICAM or equivalent.
  • First Aid / CPR certification required (either current valid license or obtain via the company within the first 4 weeks of hire)
  • Valid Australian driving licence essential.
  • White card required (current card or the company will support to organise upon hire)
