The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Senior Grants Officer (Diversion Programs) to provide a critical role within the Koori Justice Unit.

This is an Aboriginal Designated Position, classified under 'special measures' of section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010. Only Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people are eligible to apply.

About the Business Unit

The Aboriginal Justice Group is committed to driving systemic change in the justice system, to deliver better outcomes for Aboriginal Victorians. The group works in close partnership with Victorian Aboriginal communities and is guided by principles of Aboriginal self-determination.

The Koori Justice Unit (KJU) is responsible for the stewardship, coordination, and implementation of Burra Lotjpa Dunguludja Victorian Aboriginal Justice Agreement Phase 4 (AJA4), a formal partnership with Aboriginal communities to reduce Aboriginal over-representation and improve justice outcomes KJU provides coordination and support to the Aboriginal Justice Forum (AJF) and its associated partnership mechanisms, to deliver on the goals of the AJA.  It is responsible for leading effective engagement with the department's key Aboriginal partnership, the Aboriginal Justice Caucus, and other Aboriginal stakeholders

A key initiative of the AJA4 is the Koori Justice Diversion Program which comprises of the Local Justice Worker Program (LJWP), Koori Men's Diversion Program (KMDP) and Koori Women's Diversion Program (KWDP). The programs support Aboriginal people engaged, or at risk of engaging, with the justice system to understand justice systems, processes and obligations to avoid future contact with the justice system and to connect to appropriate support services, including cultural supports. The Programs are delivered by various Aboriginal Community Organisations across the state.

About the Role

The Senior Grants Officer will have the primary responsibility for supporting the delivery and grant management of the Koori Justice Diversion Program. Reporting to the Manager, you will work within a small team to support the administration of AJA related grants. Work is driven by close engagement with the Aboriginal Justice Caucus and Forum, ensuring community voice is at the heart of KJU's work.

Some of your duties will include:

  • Support the administration, management, and implementation of the Koori Justice Diversion Programs (Local Justice Worker Program and Koori Women's / Men's Diversion Program).
  • Engage and work collaboratively with Aboriginal Community Organisations and other justice related stakeholders, to inform program design and delivery, ensuring initiatives are responsive to identified community needs, legal and policy reforms.
  • Co-ordinate capability opportunities including training sessions, team workshops, learning resources to strengthen program knowledge, cultural capability, and best practices across the programs.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Aboriginal community, both society and culture and the issues impacting on it.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and work effectively with the Victorian Aboriginal community.
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of Aboriginal programs within the justice system. Co-lead the development and implementation of new policies, programs and initiatives.

Qualifications/requirements

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in law, public policy, Aboriginal affairs or similar is desired.
