The office of Andrew Wallace MP, Shadow Attorney-General is seeking applications for a full-time ongoing Senior Policy Adviser, based either in the electorate office in Bokarina, QLD, or Australian Parliament House, ACT. Regular travel between the two locations will be required.

The Senior Policy Adviser will help shape the Shadow Attorney-General's agenda by delivering timely, accurate, and strategic responses to legislation. They will provide expert legal and policy support, drive reform initiatives, engage stakeholders, and support parliamentary strategy through sharp legal analysis and clear, persuasive written materials.

The key duties of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Research, interpret and analyse legislation, legal frameworks and government policy proposals relevant to the Attorney-General's portfolio.
  • Prepare policy submissions, briefing notes, speeches, question time briefs, talking points and correspondence on legal and justice-related matters.
  • Develop policy recommendations based on legal precedent, stakeholder input and political strategy.
  • Monitor parliamentary business, committee activity, inquiries and relevant media to provide proactive advice.
  • Liaise with legal stakeholders including law societies, bar associations, peak bodies, advocacy groups, academics, and government agencies.
  • Support engagement with Parliamentary Committees, including drafting submissions, preparing evidence packs and coordinating witness appearances where required.
  • Assist with development of legislative amendments or private members' bills.
  • Provide rapid-turnaround responses to emerging legal or political issues.
  • Coordinate with the Leader of the Opposition's Office, other Shadow Ministers, and departmental or electorate office staff where relevant.

Essential:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Law (LLB or JD) with eligibility to practice (or significant equivalent experience in legislative or legal policy work).
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse and interpret legislation, case law and complex legal material.
  • Proven experience preparing policy papers, submissions or legal briefs.
  • Strong written communication skills with the ability to tailor tone for parliamentary, public or stakeholder audiences.
  • Sound political judgment and understanding of parliamentary process.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Desirable:

  • Experience in government, parliamentary, regulatory or justice sector policy roles.
  • Knowledge of Commonwealth legislative processes.
  • Experience working with or within a political office or public sector environment.

Reporting & location

Reports directly to the Shadow Attorney-General and works closely with his team. Based between Parliament House (Canberra) and Electorate Office as required. Must be willing to travel as and where required.

Employment conditions

This position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984 and the terms and conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement which include:

  • A commencing salary between $151,364 and $183,976 (Senior Adviser Level 1) will be negotiated depending on experience and relevant skills.
  • An additional Personal Staff Allowance (PSA) of $37,364 applies in recognition of, and as compensation for, reasonable additional hours of work.
  • An additional allowance for a private plated vehicle may also apply.
  • Relocation assistance, studies assistance and paid study leave may also be available (subject to eligibility requirements).
  • An employer contribution of 15.4% superannuation will be payable.
  • Flexible working arrangements, including remote/work from home may be considered for the right candidate, subject to appropriate approvals.

  • The successful applicant may be required to undergo a National Police History Check.
  • Staff may be subject to automatic cessation triggers in accordance with Section 14 of the MOP(S) Act.
  • The successful applicant will be required to comply with their obligations under the Behaviour Codes and Standards.
