This role is being advertised as both ongoing and non-ongoing, with the employment type to be determined in negotiation with the preferred candidate and the NIAA delegate.
Where a non-ongoing specified term is offered, this would be for an initial period of up to 12 months, with possibility of extension up to a maximum period of two years.
A non-ongoing offer may result in conversion to an ongoing offer of employment however this must occur within 18 months from the opening date of this advertisement.

The National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) is looking for a Media Advisor to join our high performing team. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to meaningful work that ensures Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are heard, recognised and empowered.

Our Ideal Candidate
We are looking for candidates who have professional experience in communications, media and marketing. Our ideal candidate will demonstrate the following skills and attributes:
- produce timely and accurate media content, including media releases, talking points, Q&As, media briefings, and reactive statements, ensuring alignment with NIAA's messaging and priorities
- draft and contribute to speeches, op-eds, and media responses under tight deadlines, demonstrating sound judgment and attention to detail.
- monitor media coverage, providing timely summaries, analysis, and media scans to inform internal stakeholders and support decision-making
- contribute to team reporting, including dashboards, briefing packs, and performance metrics
- provide administrative and coordination support to the media team, including managing inboxes, tracking media requests, and maintaining accurate records
- build and maintain effective working relationships with internal stakeholders and counterparts across Australian Government agencies to support coordinated communications efforts
- support the implementation of media strategies, contributing to planning and execution in line with broader communications and strategic goals.

This position is required to liaise with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities and service providers. You will require cultural competency, including:
- understanding of the matters impacting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- demonstrated capability and commitment to continue to develop cultural competency.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this position you must be an Australian Citizen.
The successful candidate will be required to be assessed through our pre-employment screening checks, such as an Australian Criminal History Check.
