The ACT Government is seeking applications from experienced and skilled individuals to fill the position of Chair of the ACT Long Service Leave Authority (ACT Leave) Governing Board.

ACT Leave is established under the
Long Service Leave (Portable Schemes) Act 2009
to administer portable long service leave benefit schemes for eligible workers in the building and construction, community service, services (formerly contract cleaning) and security industries. From 1 July 2026, coverage will expand to include hairdressing and beauty services, and food and accommodation services under the new Services Industry Scheme.

The Board convenes six times per year (approximately every 6-8 weeks), for a 2.5 hour meeting in the ACT Leave office and holds an annual full day Strategic Planning Workshop at the end of each year. The Board has also established an Audit and Risk Committee chaired by the Deputy Chair of the Board and comprising two other Members of the Board, including the Chair of the Board. which meets four times per year for a 1.5 hour meeting immediately prior to the Board meeting, and holds an additional meeting annually to review the financial statements.

The Chair Is Appointed On a Part-time Basis With Remuneration Of $47,280 Per Annum. The Term Of Appointment Is For Up To Five Years. To Be Considered, Applicants Should Be Able To Demonstrate

  • Legislative knowledge – understanding of relevant legislation and the ability to oversee and strengthen accountability and governance arrangements within a statutory body.
  • Financial acumen – ability to interpret financial statements, understand budget processes, investment markets, and financial management and planning.
  • Governance expertise – knowledge of best practice governance, risk management, compliance, reporting, and accountability.
  • Strategic thinking and planning – capacity to provide strategic direction and shape the future of the organisation.
  • Executive leadership and change management – ability to lead a small operational/compliance team through periods of organisational change.
  • Scheme administration – understanding of the industries covered by portable long service leave.
  • Board experience – prior experience serving on government boards or similar governance bodies.

Eligibility/Other Requirements

  • The Chair is required to be an independent member and not a representative of an employer or employee group within the covered industries and will be required to declare any industry membership/associations.

This is a part-time Board Member appointment. The Board convenes six times per year. In addition, Members of the Board on the Audit and Risk Committee will meet four times a year. The Chair is appointed on a part-time basis with remuneration of $47,280 per annum. The term of appointment is for up to five years.
