Remuneration: $135, $138, % Super + Salary Packaging

Location: John Hunter Hospital
Requisition ID: REQ618157

About the Service
Join a dynamic district-wide Infection Prevention Service committed to supporting clinicians and managers in preventing and controlling healthcare-associated infections across all clinical environments. Based within the John Hunter Hospital Innovation Precinct in Newcastle, our team is recognised as a central, trusted source of expertise for safe practices and compliance with state and federal requirements.
You'll work alongside a collaborative and highly skilled team that includes experienced Infection Prevention Nurses, an Infectious Diseases Clinician, and an Epidemiologist. Together, we provide personalised education, develop policies and procedures, deliver onsite training, produce publications and guidance material, and offer real-time advice to services across the district. Our workplace culture is supportive, professional, and driven by a shared commitment to improving safety and care outcomes.
About the Role
In this role, every day brings something different. You will contribute to the ongoing development and review of district-wide infection prevention policies, procedures, guidelines, and communication materials. You will be involved in assessing products and equipment, working closely with HNE Procurement, the TGA/ARTG, and the Clinical Excellence Commission to ensure alignment with best practice.
A significant part of your work will involve delivering education and competency assessment across a variety of respiratory and infection prevention programs, including training on transmission-based precautions, PPE competency programs, high-consequence infectious diseases readiness, Link Nurse/Midwife education, and fit test assessor training. You will analyse and report on respiratory surveillance data and play an important role in Winter Planning and readiness activities.
The role also involves engaging with clinicians throughout the district to provide expert advice, troubleshoot issues, and support quality improvement and research initiatives. You will assist with the coordination of mandatory training records and collaborate with Learning and Development to refresh and update educational resources. Participation in district meetings and statewide Clinical Excellence Commission forums is expected, along with regular rounding across facilities to support staff at all levels. You may also contribute to contact tracing, case management, and specialist advice for a variety of respiratory infectious diseases including influenza, measles, TB, RSV, pertussis, emerging infections, and viral haemorrhagic fevers. This position is full time; however, part time/job share arrangements may also be considered.
About You
You will thrive in this role if you are an effective communicator who can build strong relationships with clinicians, leaders, and staff across diverse settings. Strong organisational skills - including time management, prioritisation, and the ability to respond flexibly to changing demands - are essential. We are looking for someone who demonstrates leadership qualities, uses initiative, and is confident in providing guidance and expert advice.
While specialised infection prevention skills can be learned on the job, the ability to think critically, manage competing tasks, and engage constructively with a wide range of stakeholders is crucial.
You won't be alone in this role You will be welcomed into a highly supportive environment where you'll work closely with the Infection Prevention team, the Nurse Manager, the Epidemiologist, and the Clinical Director. Comprehensive orientation, education, and ongoing professional development are provided as part of our service commitment. You will have opportunities to build your skills through training, research involvement, collaborative projects, and participation in district and statewide networks.
