Why Your Role Matters
As an Asset Planning Manager you play a pivotal role in the strategic planning, allocation, and management of campus facilities to foster a vibrant and inclusive campus environment. The position requires a comprehensive understanding of space utilisation and planning concepts to support the university's education, research, and social impact objectives.
Working closely with faculties, divisions, Estate Management, and university leadership, you will develop and implement strategies that optimise space utilisation and operational efficiencies.
The role works within a team, with a primary responsibility Business, Law & Justice and Arts, Design & Architecture; all divisions (except the Division of Research); and education and student facilities.. You may be assigned to one or more faculties or divisions or may work across the portfolio; this could change to support priorities and team workload.
This role sits within UNSW Estate Management, reports to the Senior Manager Campus Planning and has no direct reports.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with key faculty and division stakeholders to understand their education, research and social impact objectives, identifying areas in the physical environment that impact their success.
- Identify and apply improvement opportunities such as refurbishment, repurpose, leasing, or reallocation, that better serve the university and its community.
- Develop and implement long-term strategic plans to optimise the university's estate portfolio, that align with faculty/divisional strategies, the university's goals and overall campus development plan
- Work with other Asset Planning Managers to assess education, workspace, research, and student space needs.
- Analyse and report on space usage through booking data, occupancy patterns, and other relevant metrics, to identify areas for improvement.
- Review space and capital investment needs, negotiating and resolving requests/issues and allocations that support diverse campus activities and priorities.
- Prepare executive-level business cases, including full cost-benefit analysis to support decision making.
- Develop functional briefs for estate improvement and development projects. Work with EM project and development teams to ensure briefs are translated into effective designs that meet stakeholder needs and business objectives.
- Lead the development and execution of communication, change and training plans for stakeholders affected by construction projects, including through the engagement of external change resources.

Skills and Experience
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in architecture, design, facilities management, or related field.
- Experience in space or campus planning, with a proven track record in managing education and workspaces in university or research institutions, is highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of space utilisation principles, learning space design principles, facility standards, equipment requirements and safety and regulatory requirements.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Experience in consultation, influencing and negotiation with a proven ability to engage with diverse stakeholders to achieve successful outcomes.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced.
- Proficiency in space management software, CAD tools, and other technologies for space analysis, visualisation, and project management is desirable
