A state government body is seeking an experienced Senior Statutory Planner to their team. Reporting to the Team Leader, you will play a pivotal role in delivering authoritative advice on planning and mining development proposals, ensuring that environmental protection and community wellbeing are at the forefront of decision-making.
About the Role
This role will be a key member of the Statutory Planning Advisory team, providing authoritative and timely advice on planning and mining development proposals referred by local government and planning authorities. In this senior role, you will lead by example, modelling high standards of performance, accountability, and integrity while mentoring and supporting less experienced colleagues. You will deliver statutory referral functions, contribute strategic advice on planning schemes and policy development, and represent the organisation positively in engaging with communities, industry, and government. You will help embed environmental and public health considerations into land use planning, drive continuous improvement using new regulatory powers, and actively contribute to a positive organisational culture that prioritises prevention of harm and collaborative outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver statutory referral functions for planning and earth resources projects.
- Ensure environmental and public health considerations are embedded in land use planning.
- Support the ongoing development of statutory planning functions with a prevention-first approach.
- Manage resources, budgets, and reporting requirements while contributing to a positive organisational culture.
Key Criteria
- Tertiary qualifications in planning or a related field (postgraduate desirable).
- Senior experience in land use planning, preferably within government.
- Detailed knowledge of the Victorian Planning System, Environment Protection Act 2017, Environmental Effects Act 1978, and Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990.
- Proven ability to mentor, provide technical expertise, and peer review work.
- Strong project management skills, with experience delivering multiple concurrent projects.
- A collaborative mindset, with the ability to build enduring relationships across government, industry, and community.
- A problem-solving approach, openness to innovation, and commitment to continuous improvement.
This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the success of a state government body as it enters a new era of environmental protection in Victoria. You'll be part of a values-driven organisation that works with communities, governments, and industry to deliver outcomes that safeguard the environment and public health for generations to come.
