The Organisation

Yarrabah Aboriginal Shire Council is a progressive local government serving a vibrant community of approximately 5,000 residents. Located just an hour east of Cairns, Yarrabah is Queensland's largest Indigenous community, nestled between forested hills and the Coral Sea. The Council is deeply committed to cultural preservation, community empowerment, and sustainable development. With a Town Centre Masterplan in place and a strong focus on infrastructure, housing, and employment, Yarrabah is poised for transformation. Council services span health, education, arts, and essential infrastructure, with a vision to build a thriving, inclusive future for all Yarrabians.

The Position

As CEO you will provide strategic oversight of financial sustainability, governance, workforce capability, and service delivery. As a 'hands on' and visible leader you will champion community engagement, drive cultural change, and foster respectful relationships with Traditional Owners, residents, and stakeholders. Key accountabilities include implementing the Corporate and Operational Plans, managing capital works and essential services, advocating for funding and investment, and ensuring compliance with the LG and other relevant legislation. The CEO will also play a pivotal role in shaping economic development, disaster preparedness, and organisational culture.

About You

You are a seasoned executive leader with either a strong track record in local government, Indigenous governance, a similarly complex environment or a combination of these. Your high-level strategic thinking, financial acumen, and deep understanding of public policy and community development are critical. Importantly,, your leadership style is collaborative, culturally respectful, and grounded in integrity. Renowned for your success in leading diverse teams, managing change, and building trust with elected and/or board members and external partners you will have experience working in Indigenous communities or remote settings. Expertise in governance, stakeholder engagement, and Native Title processes and a relevant tertiary qualification is essential, with postgraduate studies in leadership, governance, or community development viewed favourably.

Why this Role?

This is a rare opportunity to lead meaningful change in a culturally rich and resilient community. Yarrabah offers a unique blend of professional challenge and lifestyle appeal, with its stunning natural surroundings and proximity to Cairns. As CEO, you will have the autonomy to shape the future of the region, create pathways for local employment, and build a legacy of inclusive growth and prosperity.

As one of Australia's most vibrant multicultural cities and the international gateway to two of the world's great natural wonders – the Great Barrier Reef and the world's oldest tropical rainforest – Cairns is renowned worldwide as an iconic destination and as a sort after place to live. The commute each day to Yarrabah will take you on one of the most spectacular drives in the region.

Council will offer a competitive remuneration package including a fully maintained 4WD vehicle, generous relocation assistance, professional development support, and monthly RDOs.

If you are ready to lead with heart, humility, and hope—Yarrabah is ready for you.
