About the Role:

The Aboriginal Wellbeing Peer Practitioner uses their own lived experience of mental health challenges to provide culturally safe support to people accessing the NAMMHC Immediate Access Care program in Elizabeth. Operating 7 days a week, 365 days a year, the service is guided by Taingiwilta Pirku Kawantila (Strong Community in the North), an initiative shaped by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community voices.

In this role, the practitioner offers hope, reduces stigma, shares collective wisdom, and provides culturally focused connections to support. Acting as a role model and advocate, they help strengthen NAMMHC's ability to deliver culturally appropriate and safe mental health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Sonder provides full support for accredited training, cultural mentoring, supervision, and ongoing development.

Experience Requirements:

  • Experience in drawing on lived experience of mental health challenges, recovery and substance use to provide support to individuals and their families in accordance to Peer Support principles.
  • Experience with delivering Peer Support services for people experiencing mental health challenges and or substance use
  • Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in health and wellbeing settings
  • Experience in maintaining continuous quality improvement.

Qualification and Other Requirements:

  • Certificate IV in Peer Work or equivalent qualification with demonstrated experience in a lived experience or Peer Practitioner role
  • Current or willing to obtain a Working with Children's Check (WWCC)
  • Current or willing to obtain a National Police Check (NPC)
