Key purpose of this role (and team)
This role positions AGL at the forefront of the energy transition by working with the largest energy consumers in Australia who are seeking to decarbonise their operations.
Reporting to the Major Projects Sales Manager, the Business Development Manager will originate and assist with the development of hybrid power systems for AGL's largest industrial energy consumers.
The successful candidate will be responsible for driving the development and execution of a strong pipeline of opportunities, contributing to the project development process, and staying abreast of the projects through to completion and energisation.
The role will contribute to the development of medium to high capital value behind-the-meter and off-grid power generation projects for submission to customers, the AGL Board, and/or financiers.
Key accountabilities of this role
Business Development
· Lead the Business Development activities for projects including:
o Research large industrial energy consumers and relevant stakeholders within these organisations.
o Drive engagement with targeted organisations and develop and maintain strong relationships.
o Identify and engage relevant consultants that can aid in the origination of new opportunities.
o Lead the development and preparation of tender submissions from time to time, including management and coordination of all stakeholders contributing to the submission.
o Develop and maintain strong relationships to identify potential renewable energy and hybrid power systems projects.
o Develop a detailed understanding of each organisation's needs to inform the development of profitable technical and commercial solutions.
o Drive and manage the financial and technical solution development for each opportunity.
o Lead the preparation and submission of all required project documentation and business cases for approval by the customer, AGL Board, and/or financiers.
o Effectively track and communicate with management the status of opportunities and projects in development, leveraging the CRM tools and other regular reporting.
o Work with Legal and Commercial stakeholders as required to refine contract terms and conditions on a project-by-project basis.
o Work with a diverse group of internal stakeholders to ensure all projects are progressed through a formal project governance process in accordance with AGL business rules.
o Successfully manage the projects from inception through to contract execution and handover to the delivery team.
o Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, regulations, and industry standards.
o Keep abreast of industry developments and identify new opportunities and threats which may arise over time.
Project Development
· Support the Project Development activities including:
o Work with the Project Development Manager, Engineering and Delivery teams to define the required scope of work and budget for the technical feasibility study of each project. Package an early works agreement and organize execution of the agreement with the customer.
o Review budgets and schedules and ensure alignment with the project objectives.
o Work closely with the legal and commercial advisors on the identification and acquisition of appropriate land for projects, or easements if required.
o Work closely with the legal and commercial advisors, and the customer to develop and negotiate the projects agreement/s.
o Identify and engage relevant consultants to aid in the project development process as required.
o Engage and maintain relationships with contractors and technology providers to support the requirements of each project in support of the Project Development Manager.
o Identification, management, and reporting of key project risks.
o Work with the delivery team to ensure all projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
o Contribute to community consultation activities for development projects if required.
Growth Strategy
· Develop and actively manage a pipeline of opportunities to meet annual targets in terms of pipeline growth, revenue, and gross margin.
· Participate in the assessment of emerging technology.
· Provide support to refine the processes and procedures to effectively manage project budgets, timeframes, and risks.
Ensure that all Health, Safety, and Environment Systems and goals are introduced and adhered to while meeting the organisation's policies and standards for HSE Management.
Demonstrate the AGL values by acting in the best interests of AGL and working together across the business to create the best overall results and decisions. Encouraging the sharing of skills and experience and contributing to the success of the business at all levels, through participation in:
· Collaboration with the team on lessons learned reviews.
· Sharing and seeking access to the knowledge base of the broader AGL team.
Qualifications, key skills and experience required
The successful candidate will have the following skills, experience, and qualifications:
Skills
· Commercial negotiation skills.
· Technical understanding of renewable energy and thermal power systems including wind, solar, storage and generator technologies.
· Excellent presentation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
· Strong financial analysis skills.
· Business acumen related to large industrial businesses.
· Understanding of energy markets and value drivers for large-scale generation projects, in particular renewables and storage.
· Strong writing skills, and intermediate or advanced Microsoft Excel, Word and Power-Point skills.
Experience
· Ideally experienced in the development of renewable energy projects
· Minimum 5 years' experience in power industry and/or similar development roles.
· Exposure to development process from concept to investment commitment
· Strong understanding of the energy market and energy solutions
Qualifications
· Bachelor level tertiary qualification required, preferably in both business and technical related fields such as Business, Finance, Commerce and Engineering.
Key Challenges
· Managing numerous internal and external stakeholders.
· Negotiating with counterparties, landholders and other external parties.
· Contributing to multiple projects concurrently.
· Assisting with planning and regulatory processes.
· Project, Regulatory and Risk management.
Budget accountability & decision-making authority
The key responsibility of the role is to contribute to the development and delivery of projects in the range of $5m to $100m that are presented to the AGL board for investment approval.
Within the role the following are key activities:
· Contributing to development budgets for internal approval.
· Assistance with the preparation of contracts in accordance with AGL standard delegations.
· Assisting in the negotiation of commercial arrangements in major contracts acceptable to AGL.
