About the Role

Australia's energy market is undergoing unprecedented transformation with increasing renewable penetration, evolving regulatory frameworks, and growing market complexity. Our client's Wholesale Energy team is seeking an experienced Regulatory Specialist to join their Melbourne office to provide strategic regulatory advisory and compliance expertise supporting their wholesale energy operations.

This is an exceptional opportunity for an energy professional with strong regulatory knowledge to influence major commercial decisions and shape regulatory outcomes in one of the world's most dynamic energy markets. You will work directly with senior management while building relationships with key regulatory bodies and industry participants.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide regulatory advisory and strategic advice on wholesale energy market regulations and policy developments
  • Lead preparation and coordination of regulatory submissions to AEMO, AER, and AEMC
  • Analyse wholesale energy market trends, regulatory changes, and their impacts on commercial operations
  • Support energy trading strategies through regulatory analysis and compliance advisory
  • Prepare regulatory submissions, position papers, and stakeholder consultation responses
  • Monitor and analyse energy market rule changes and ensure compliance across commercial operations
  • Provide regulatory advisory for renewable energy integration and grid stability mechanisms
  • Provide strategic advice on capacity mechanisms, ancillary services markets, and transmission planning
  • Engage with regulatory bodies, industry associations, and government agencies on policy matters
  • Support commercial teams with regulatory analysis for energy trading and investment decisions
  • Lead cross-functional projects on regulatory compliance and market participation strategies
  • Represent the company at industry forums and regulatory consultation processes

About the Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who has:

  • 5-8 years' experience in energy regulation, regulatory advisory, or energy market operations
  • Strong understanding of National Electricity Market operations, regulations, and compliance requirements
  • Experience with regulatory submission processes and stakeholder engagement
  • Excellent knowledge of AEMO market operations, AER regulatory frameworks, and AEMC rule change processes
  • Strong analytical and advisory skills with experience in regulatory compliance
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills for regulatory engagement
  • Experience engaging with regulatory bodies and preparing formal submissions
  • Strong commercial acumen and understanding of wholesale energy trading operations
  • Proactive approach with ability to manage multiple complex regulatory matters
  • Stakeholder management skills and experience working with government agencies

Highly Regarded:

  • Advanced degree in law, business, engineering, economics, or related discipline
  • Previous experience at energy regulator, market operator, or major energy company
  • Understanding of renewable energy integration and regulatory compliance challenges
  • Experience with capacity mechanisms, ancillary services, and transmission planning
  • Professional qualifications in regulatory advisory or energy sector
  • International energy market and regulatory experience
