About Bio Concepts
Bio Concepts is an Australian leader in practitioner-only nutritional supplements and clinical education. For more than 40 years, we've supported healthcare professionals with evidence-based products, quality manufacturing, and a deep respect for the science that underpins natural medicine.
Behind the scenes, we're growing fast, and our technology needs to keep up. Our applications power everything from eCommerce and education to CRM, logistics, and warehouse management. We're now looking for a senior technical leader to help modernise and evolve the platform that powers Bio Concepts.
The Opportunity
This is a rare chance to take ownership of a mature, business-critical Rails application that's been evolving for over a decade. The system is a unified monolith built with Ruby on Rails 8.1, Hotwire, PostgreSQL, Redis, Sidekiq, and runs on AWS ECS.
You'll lead the technical direction for its next phase - improving architecture, increasing modularity, and helping us scale as the business continues to grow. You'll work closely with our long-term agency partner (who currently leads development) and collaborate across teams to ensure the platform continues to be fast, maintainable, and a joy to work on.
This is a hands-on technical role: you'll be writing code, shaping the system architecture, and guiding key engineering decisions. You'll also play a vital part in establishing internal engineering capability and helping define how we build software at Bio Concepts.
What You'll Do
- Lead technical planning and architectural decision-making for our core Rails application.
- Continue the modernisation journey — improving performance, modularity, and maintainability.
- Collaborate with our external agency to ensure consistent delivery and quality.
- Work across the stack, from Rails backend to Hotwire-powered front-end.
- Partner with other internal developers to integrate shared authentication and data flows between systems.
- Engage with cross-functional stakeholders (logistics, education, marketing, customer service) to uncover opportunities for technology to improve operations and user experience.
- Establish development practices that set a high bar for reliability, scalability, and code quality.
What Success Looks Like (first 6–12 months)
- Architectural clarity: You've mapped clear domain boundaries within the monolith and developed a pragmatic plan for decoupling and modernisation.
- Integration & collaboration: You've established data and authentication sharing between Bio Concepts' internal applications.
- Trusted relationships: You've built strong connections with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, uncovering tangible ways software can better support the business.
You'll likely bring:
- 10+ years of professional experience in Ruby on Rails development.
- A solid understanding of relational database design (PostgreSQL preferred).
- Experience with background job systems (Sidekiq, Redis) and cloud infrastructure (AWS ECS or similar).
- Strong architectural reasoning and familiarity with modular monoliths or domain-driven design.
- Comfort working with Hotwire and front-end fundamentals.
- Excellent communication skills and a willingness to engage directly with internal teams.
- Experience leading a large Rails codebase or guiding a modernisation effort will make you stand out.
Working at Bio Concepts
We're a medium-sized business with a strong sense of purpose and a collaborative culture. You'll be joining a small but growing internal engineering team, supported by an established agency partnership.
We offer flexible hybrid work arrangements, with offices in Brisbane (Banyo) and Melbourne (CBD), and are happy to support relocation to Brisbane if you'd like to join us in person. Remote work within Australia is also possible, though we ask that you make regular trips to Brisbane to build relationships with stakeholders and immerse
yourself in the business.
Why Join Us
- Help modernise a mission-driven platform that supports practitioners improving lives.
- Be the first internal engineer dedicated to a system at the heart of a growing company.
- Work closely with experienced colleagues, trusted partners, and a business that values thoughtful engineering.
- Shape technical direction in an environment that's open to new ideas and long-term thinking.
