Female Support Worker/ Companion

Our family is seeking a contract Support Worker/ Companion, interested in providing support for a gentle and quiet female family member who is 61years old. She has an intellectual disability and resides with support, in her own home at Hazelwood Park.

We are seeking a support worker/ companion who is prepared to sleep over and support a 4pm- 9am shift, on a Wednesday night. The support worker must have a gentle and caring disposition and thoughtfully engage the client in conversation and activities. Being observant and responsive to her needs is most important, as her conversation is limited.

This shift is one of gentle relaxed support, as the client is generally tired after the day's activities.

There are periods of both active and passive support, during the shift. Sometimes the client enjoys her own time resting or listening to music in her room. She feels more secure knowing there is another person in the home to call on for assistance or support, as needed.

This shift will require a gentle transition and some commitment and flexibility for some daytime orientation hours to start to build a connection with the client.

The position would suit a female support worker, who is looking both to establish a growing companionship / relationship with the person and who is also seeking long term commitment and security in their role. Further casual overnight/ day shifts for backup to other staff, may also become available occasionally.

Previous experience caring for a person with a disability is favorable but not essential. You must be a kind, compassionate and reliable female person.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • assistance for provision of personal care support (is able to toilet independently) -assistance with showering & changing into night clothes.
  • assistance with household tasks- preparing the evening meal, assistance to encourage eating (as she always rushes eating her food)
  • observing teeth cleaning (has front denture)
  • allowing her independence in her room to listen to music if she requests private time.
  • companionship (maybe watching tv together) until she is ready for bed 7-8pm
  • passive overnight support

Requirements

  • NDIS worker check or its equivalent
  • Current first aid certificate
  • Current driver's license
  • A reliable vehicle to provide support for transport, in an emergency.
  • Australian permanent resident status is required for this position
  • Applicants must obtain an ABN (Australian Business Number) before commencing work

Reimbursement

Payment for the support is a negotiated rate of pay between the worker and the family, who is self-managing the support. Support workers who are currently working with their own ABN (or are prepared to seek an ABN), are most welcome to apply.
