Purpose of the role
The Secondary Teacher of Chinese contributes to the delivery of a contemporary, engaging and student-centred language
learning program. The Teacher fosters curiosity, cultural understanding and confident language use, while supporting the
College's commitment to personalised learning, wellbeing and growth.
Main Duties/Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning
- Plan, teach and assess a rigorous and engaging Chinese curriculum that reflects current pedagogical best practice
- Develop learning experiences that promote intercultural understanding, global citizenship and authentic
communication
- Use a range of assessment strategies to monitor, record and report on student progress
- Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs and abilities of students
- Integrate digital tools and learning technologies to enhance language learning
Learning Environment and Student Wellbeing
- Foster a classroom culture that is inclusive, supportive and encourages linguistic risk-taking
- Promote student wellbeing by building strong, positive relationships and modelling respectful interactions
- Monitor and support student engagement, academic progress and personal development
Professional Contribution
- Work collaboratively within the LOTE Faculty to develop and refine curriculum and shared resources
- Participate actively in professional learning, reflective practice and performance development processes
- Contribute to the broader life of the College, including excursions, cultural events, House activities and co-curricular
programs
Selection Criteria
Experience
Demonstrated experience teaching Chinese in a secondary school setting
Using contemporary language teaching approaches, including communicative and immersive methodologies
- Evidence of effective differentiation to support diverse learner needs, including extension and targeted support
- Assessing and providing meaningful feedback to support ongoing student growth
- Teaching or supporting VCE Chinese, including assessment and exam preparation practices (desirable)
- Experience contributing to cultural programs, language events, international partnerships or immersion experiences
(desirable)
- Involvement in, or contributions to, the school community beyond the classroom
- Evidence of regular involvement in professional learning
Skills and attributes
- Ability to inspire a love of language and culture in young people
- Strong understanding of contemporary language teaching methodology, including communicative and immersion
approaches
- Commitment to inclusive education and differentiated practice
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively
- Reflective, creative, adaptive and willing to innovate
- Demonstrated alignment with ELTHAM College values of creativity, individuality, social awareness and community
- Knowledge of child safe practices, including reporting requirements
Qualifications and Employer Requirements
- Clearance to work with children - registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT)
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Education and Chinese (or equivalent)
- Experience teaching Secondary Chinese required; capacity to teach VCE Chinese advantageous
- Fluency in Mandarin (required) and excellent English communication skills.
- Entitled to live and work in Australia
- Current First Aid Certificate
- A commitment and capacity to contribute to the College's co-curricular program
- Completion of Protecting Children – Mandatory Reporting and Other Obligations (training provided by DoE Victoria)
