About the role:

We are seeking an experienced Solicitor to join the team responsible for managing a large and varied file-load including complex County Court appeals and contravention hearings. This role is ideal for a solicitor with experience in the Magistrates' and County Courts who is looking to leverage their litigation skills in a challenging and rewarding new capacity.

What You Will Do:

  • Be a litigation expert in the preparation and conduct of moderately complex appeals against conviction and sentence from the Children's and Magistrates' Courts to the County and Supreme Courts.
  • Manage contravention hearings arising from Community Correction Orders (CCOs) in indictable and appeal matters.
  • Work collaboratively with a wide range of essential stakeholders, including Crown Prosecutors, external counsel, defence practitioners, Corrections Victoria, Victoria Police, victims, witnesses and Court staff.
  • Instruct Counsel and appear in Court, including responding to urgent matters such as executed warrants and bail applications.
  • Shape the next generation by providing mentorship and assistance to junior solicitors and legal trainees.

About You:

You are a Lawyer holding a current Victorian Practising Certificate, with:

  • Demonstrated experience in preparing and conducting criminal litigation, including appeals and contravention proceedings, or a proven ability to rapidly acquire this knowledge.
  • Thorough knowledge of criminal law, procedure, evidence, sentencing law, and appeal processes.
  • A practical, proactive approach to problem-solving and litigation preparation.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively and sensitively with diverse stakeholders.
  • A proven ability to manage competing priorities, work independently, and deliver high-quality outcomes within tight timeframes.
