Primary objective

Medical Education Registrar (MER) for the Royal Darwin and Palmerston Hospitals, under the supervision of the Clinical Dean, will be responsible

for coordination, delivery and assessment of MD and similar medical educational programs, at primary medical degree level, within the RDPH.

They will be offered the opportunity to participate in a range of academic development activities and will be expected to participate in professional

development programs designed to promote excellence in clinical teaching. It will be a unique opportunity to work closely with academics,

clinicians and develop a career interest and further academic and research networks through university and clinical streams.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Delivering teaching sessions such as clinical skills coaching at the bedside.

  1. Mentoring medical students within activities such as clinical skills sessions.
  2. Facilitate interactive sessions with groups of students to support achievement of learning. Objectives. Supervising students (including

interdisciplinary groups) during the Hospital sessions.

4. Working with clinical teaching leads to organise teaching.

  1. Contribute to the preparation of written examinations and practical clinical examination.
  2. Acting as an examiner for, the Objectively Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE) and other clinical examinations.

  3. If working part time, the time fraction for the medical education registrars will require that they will normally be expected to commit to

delivering contact teaching every week, assessment of students with mini CEX and assistance with OSCE and written assessments.

8. Outside of the academic term(s) the registrars will have the flexibility to consolidate their time to work towards the key responsibilities

described above, and to participate in the enhanced training program

9. Work with the clinical leads to coordinate and ensure the provision of teaching and supervision to medical students by specialists/registrars

or junior medical officers in your department

10. Support junior medical officers (interns RMOs and other registrars) to develop skills in the mentoring and supervisory support of medical

students

11. Liaise with Flinders University as well the clinical leads from different departments and divisions on teaching or students' issues.

12. Coordinate the Ward or clinical placement ward based medical student assessment processes (such as mini-CEX)

13. Contribute to curriculum development, and policies relevant to medical student placements

14. Attend training meetings such as Clinical Teaching Steering Group (CTSG), Northern Territory Course Development Committee (NTCDC) and

Prevocational Education Group (PEAG) and contribute towards MD, intern and JMO education.

15. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure

high quality, safe services and workplaces.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Eligible for medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia.

  1. Demonstrate keenness to acquire knowledge of educational principles in medical education.

  2. Commitment to continuing education and undergraduate and post graduate teaching activities.

  3. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and the ability to interact positively in a cross-cultural work environment with

a commitment to social accountability.

  1. An interest in and a commitment to improving Indigenous health.

  2. Ability to work in a team

  3. An ability to interact effectively with people of diverse cultures.
