Allied Health Assistant (Grade 2)
- Ongoing, Part Time Role – 36 Hours per Fortnight
- 18 hours per week (3 days) - Monday & Thursday (full days, not negotiable) + 3 hours Friday (negotiable)
An exciting opportunity exists for an enthusiastic, dynamic and skilled Allied Health Assistant to join the Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Exercise Physiology and Podiatry team at Peter Mac.
Working under the direction of qualified allied health professionals, you will play a vital role in supporting high-quality patient care across oncology settings. You will be required to perform duties of a general nature to support allied health screening, referral, assessment, treatment, education, research, quality and clinical programs. You will also assist in the running of clinical programs, specific to occupational therapy, exercise physiology and physiotherapy. In addition, the role includes operation tasks such equipment provision and consignment stock oversight.
Key Responsibilities
• Deliver delegated patient care under the supervision of qualified allied health professionals.
• Support allied health programs, including patient education and group-based interventions.
• Assist with clinical and operational tasks such as equipment provision and stock management.
• Contribute to service quality, research and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team to enhance patient outcomes.
The successful applicant will possess:
• Certificate III or IV in Allied Health Assistance (or equivalent qualification).
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated organisational and time management abilities.
• Ability to work independently and effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
• Experience in an acute hospital setting (desirable).

Essential Requirements
- Allied Health Assistant Certificate III or IV (or equivalent)
- First aid and basic life support (CPR)
- Driver's Licence (valid in Victoria)
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Good level of interpersonal and conflict management skills and a proven ability to relate effectively with staff, patients and the general public
- Demonstrated organisational, time management, planning and priority setting skills in relation to own workload
- Demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
- Ability to work independently
- Demonstrated commitment to continued professional development and education
- Good computer literacy

- Experience working within an acute hospital setting

Key Accountabilities

1. Safe and efficient patient care delivery under direction of an allied health professional or as protocol dictates
- Carries a caseload appropriate to delegated responsibilities (80-90% clinically related activity)
- Deliver standardised or predetermined care and education to at risk patients (supported by allied health professionals and decision making tool / triage framework / care pathways)
- Conducts group and individual programs safely, effectively and efficiently
- Follow assessment and treatment guidelines as directed by line manager, other key allied health professionals or as part of standard protocol
- Safely facilitates client treatment, handling and movement
- Conduct or assist in individual and group programs
- Facilitate functional independence, safety and quality of life for clients
- Patient bookings and portering as required
2. Multidisciplinary teamwork with two-way communication
- Communicates patient progress, outcomes or changes to relevant team members and referrers in a timely and appropriate manner (verbal and written)
- Family and community liaison
- Educate staff, students, patients and carers appropriate to their needs
- Maintain documentation and statistics for clinical and non-clinical activity
3. Deliver effective and timely screening of potential referrals according to allied health triage protocol
- Able to follow decision making framework to identify potential allied health referrals
- Facilitate efficient prioritisation, delegation and onward referral
- Information gathering for potential multidisciplinary referrals (e.g. generated by patient-administered screening questionnaire) as per allied health screening protocol
- Conduct standardised patient screening / interview and identify key referral triggers
- Facilitate referral prioritisation and standardised care where indicated
- Provide basic education to low risk patients in a variety of settings (inpatients, outpatients, day therapies, telephone based)
- Feedback to allied health professionals and referrers
- Liaises with community based agencies and services as indicated or directed
4. Contributes to project and service development, monitoring and evaluation
- Feedback to line manager on service efficiency and effectiveness
- Support research and service redesign initiatives, including performing outcome measurement, data collection and data entry
- Contributes ideas and suggestions to inform program development
- Performs quality or research activities relevant to the position and under guidance of key allied health professionals / line managers (including contribution to a minimum of 1 quality process/project per year)
- Achieves objectives and deliverables of projects and services relevant to the role under guidance of line manager, and within agreed timeframes

5. Actively participates in continuing professional development and education programs
- Participates in regular supervision and appraisal with allocated supervisor / line manager, including reflective practice and goal setting
- Liaises with line manager and key allied health professionals regarding professional development needs, goals and opportunities
- Seeks out and attends professional development to expand scope of practice and enhance skillset
- Participates in training, staff meetings and in-service programs as directed
- Seeks assistance as required
- Completes all mandatory and departmental training within stipulated timeframes
- Provides and contributes to education of peers, students, other staff, volunteers, patients and carers (in line with experience and allocated EFT)
- Knowledge and application of the principles outlined in relevant professional and organisational policies and acts (including Code of Ethics and the organisations Code of Conduct)
6. Manages equipment stores as needed (backfill role)
- Investigates, sources, orders, cleans, constructs and repairs specific aids & equipment as directed
- Liaises with staff regarding flow and supply of equipment
7. Maintains accurate clinical, statistical and other records
- Maintains documentation related to patient assessment and treatment, functional outcome measures and intervention plans
- Clinical and non-clinical statistics are entered daily
- Patient related and administrative records are maintained according to allied health policy or under direction
- Accurate data collection and data entry
8. Complete administrative tasks and ordering as directed by allied health staff
Primary:
- Maintain and update documents and databases as directed
- Monitor and maintain stock levels and supplies
- Track and facilitate the provision of equipment and supplies as directed
- Maintain supplies of stationery, forms, patient handouts and information sheets
- Perform general reception duties as required e.g. Answering the telephone, taking messages, booking patient appointments, running errands
