About the role and team
Our Custody and Transport Officers are responsible for the safety, security, and humane custody of individuals in our care. We manage custodial operations across Justice Services in the Northern Territory, including the Darwin Local Court and Custody Watch Houses across the Darwin region and soon Custodial operations in Alice Springs. This role encompasses supervision, court-related duties, medical and bedside escorts, transport duties, and adherence to all relevant policies and procedures. You will join an evolving team across these growing operations, working under the guidance of Site Supervisors and an Operations Manager supporting all Justice Service delivery across the Northern Territory.
We're looking for strong communicators who are adaptable to their work environments. You'll be engaging directly with people in custody, so it's crucial that you're comfortable with working in a custodial environment, looking after all individuals in your care.
The role will require shift work, providing a variety of different rosters (24/7 and Monday to Friday) with a mix of different shift lengths (8-hr to 12-hr shifts).
More specifically, you'll be responsible for:
- Watch House Custody:Looking after the daily routine, watch house operations. and supervision of people in custody - including providing first aid when required.
- Court Custody:You'll be responsible for court cell management, escorting people in custody to and from courtrooms, and managing the custody of people awaitng court appearances.
- Transportation: Safely transporting people in custody to designated locations such as courts, medical appointments, hospitals, and custody centres.
- Bed Sits: Continuous security monitoring and observation, risk mitigation, reporting, and ensuring patient welfare within a public health setting.
- Documentation and Reporting: Preparing quality written reports relating to prisoner information, prisoner assessments, incidents, and transport logs - ensuring documentation complies with legal requirements.
Remuneration
You can earn up to $70,000 working across a Monday to Friday roster, covering daytime shifts.
Working across multiple services and a broader 24/7 roster pattern, you will have the earning potential of approximately $85,000.
All officers will be entitled to 12% Superannuation and overtime when available.
The hourly rates are as follows:
- Weekdays: $33.17
- Nights: $38.15
- Saturdays: $49.76
- Sundays: $66.34
- Public Holidays: $82.93
What we're looking for
- You are willing to work directly with people in custody.
- You hold a full and current Australian driver's licence
- Be eligible to work full-time in Australia, with no restrictions
The recruitment process
G4S runs a staged recruitment process, running for 4-6 weeks, that includes:
- Applying online with a CV
- Completing a short 15 minute, online assessment
- Phone call with a member of the Talent Acquisition team
- Attending an onsite interview in Darwin with 2 members of the G4S team, or Online Interview for Alice applicants
- Background checks, including a national police check, reference checks, and a medical assessment
- A SAFE NT corrections clearance - submit and receive a full clearance from Corrections and Police NT for approval to work after training
